Girl Scouts Dance the Night Away at Annual "Me and My Guy" Events

Hundreds of Brownie and Daisy Girl Scouts in SPF kicked up their heels at two annual Me and My Guy Dances.

On February 10, 200 second and third grade Brownie Girl Scouts stepped on to the Union Catholic High School red carpet on for the annual “Me and My Guy” dance and an evening of Hollywood Glam.

The “Me and My Guy” Dance (also known as the annual father daughter dance) draws hundreds of Fanwood and Scotch Plains girl scouts for a special night complete with refreshments, a DJ and a professional photographer to capture that classic annual portrait with each scout’s special guy.

This event was organized by Cadette Girl Scouts, Annemarie Kearns and Kaavya Krishna-Kumar who planned this special night as a requirement for achieving the Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can achieve and is awarded to Girl Scouts who strive to make a difference in their community.

The Girl Scouts of America guidelines state that working for the Silver Award “gives [the Girl Scout] the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community.” Cadette Scouts must engage in a project that reaches beyond the scope of the Girl Scout community and make a positive impact on their local town.

“The Brownie Girl Scouts and their fathers had a fun time and the Cadette Girl Scouts got to use their leadership skills to organize a large community event,” said Cadette troop leader Melissa Kearns.

Another “Me and My Guy” dance was held for Daisy Scouts in Kindergarten and first grade on January 28 at St. Bartholomew Academy in Scotch Plains. Over 350 Daisy scouts gathered with their special guy for the Winter Wonderland themed event. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Girl Scouts are organizing another “Me and My Guy” Dance for older scouts that will occur in March.

The January 28 event was organized by Cadette Girl Scouts Tara Coffey and Caroline Ringel of Cadette Girl Scout troop 40052, who also organized the event as a requirement for their Girl Scout Silver Award.

Coffey and Ringel made arrangements to obtain the snacks, photographer, and DJ, and enlisted other girls from their 8th-grade troop to make decorations and help at the event.

In addition to dancing the night away and enjoying an array of tasty refreshments, Daisy Scouts also went home with light up leis and temporary tattoos. And of course, who could forget, the first of many Me and My Guy couple portraits to come.
