Golfers Tee Off to Support SPFHS Music and Sports

A joint golf fundraiser will be held on Monday at Shackamaxon Country Club.

Members of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Music and Athletic Boosters are hoping for more than a hole-in-one this Monday when they hold their first-ever joint golf fundraising event at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains.

The golf outing is just one of the Boosters’ planned fundraisers for the year which will benefit the school’s many sports teams, bands, and music departments—all of which whose needs exceed what school budgets can provide.

“The money will go toward costs not covered by the school, such as transportation,” said Kevin Benovengo, who is part of the Golf Committee for the joint venture. “The kids acquired a school bus that they painted, but there are still some functions they can’t go to because of transportation. It’s a shame that the kids might not be able to go away for a football game, for example. Also, every coach in the high school has a wish list of what they can’t get using the athletic budget. Sometimes it’s regular equipment, but sometimes it’s special equipment like video taping for wrestling or coats for kids on the sidelines of the games. The Boosters are the ones who pay for the letters, the trophies, and the awards for the kids. Both sides have scholarships that we give away. We try to boost the programs up and fill the void in the budgets. It’s a tough row to hoe. We on the athletic side have over $20,000 per year on our wish list alone.”

The festivities will include a full round of golf, lunch, and dinner—complete with musical entertainment by the Terrill Middle School band and the SP-F High School’s award-winning Moonglowers jazz ensemble. There will also be a host of prizes and raffles.

“The Athletic Boosters ran a golf outing two years ago, which raised about $3,000,” Benovengo said. “The Music Boosters had their golf outing last year. Jamie Denman, a Scotch Plains police officer and participant, suggested we run an event together, and we decided to do it. It’s better if we work together, since we are together.”

So far, the weather is shaping up to be the perfect forecast for Monday, with temperatures in the upper 70's.

“It’s going to be nice,” Benovengo said confidently. “We’re looking forward to it, and hopefully the weather will be with us. Hopefully we can raise $5,000. That will be a good thing.”
