'Kids Who Walk to School Rule,' Local Students Say

Scotch Plains-Fanwood schools participated in a walk to school movement on Wednesday.

If you noticed less school traffic on the road Wednesday morning, it may be because most local students were using a different mode of transportation: walking.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood schools participated in International Walk to School Day, an annual event that brings children and local leaders together to encourage making their communities more walkable.

The effort also promotes physical activity, teaching safe walking skills to children, awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made, concern for the environment, and reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.

At McGinn Elementary on Wednesday morning, students met at two designated locations: either a parking lot down the street or the back path behind the school. The children then marched with parents, teachers, their principal, and local leaders to the front of the school before heading into class.

Students seemed to really get into the effort, with several even carrying signs that said "Let's Get Moving!" and "Be Cool! Walk 2 School!"
