There’s a Dragon in the Garden

Renée Collins, a long time Fanwood resident and art educator, recently donated her time and expertise to create a bottle cap mural to celebrate the new McGinn Elementary School Garden in Scotch Plains.

Families of the McGinn community, and past and present students worked with Mrs. Collins on the design and construction of the final piece, which measured 4’x8’ and used over 1,900 recycled bottle caps.

The theme for the project was “There’s a Dragon in the Garden” in honor of the school mascot, Flame the Dragon, and the new garden/outdoor classroom.

“These projects are so wonderful and accomplish many goals for a school community, including beautification and school spirit, a lesson in recycling, and participating a large-scale community artwork. The families and children who participated brought me great joy, and were such a help!”, said Mrs. Collins.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools displayed the new mural at the Board of Education Offices for Arts in Education Week. The mural then returned to McGinn Elementary School to be permanently installed in the school garden.

Renée Collins teaches art classes to children in preschool through middle school at Positive Space: Art Instruction for Kids, her private studio in Fanwood.
