Raiders Boys Soccer Ready For Sectional Semifinal

Raiders will play Chatham Cougars tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School.

After a ferocious victory over the Union Farmers at the County Championship last Sunday, the Scotch Plains Fanwood Boys Varsity Soccer team is "fired up" for the State Sectional game against the Chatham Cougars which is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School. The championship was the first since 2007 and was also the first time that any of the players had experienced winning the county title.

The Raiders are currently the number one seed in the tournament and stand strong at 20 - 2. Chatham, the number three seed beat Scotch Plains Fanwood last year in an agonizing 3 - 0 defeat. Goalie, Vinnie Bianco, who has delivered 14 shut outs this season is more than ready for the rematch.

"It's going to be a tough game, but we want to get revenge for last year's game," Bianco stated.

The Raiders are lucky enough to have a home field advantage, and will no doubt be surrounded by hundreds of members of Raider Nation , a group led by Scotch Plains Fanwood students who swarm the stands, overwhelming the crowd with undeniable Raider Pride.

"The team really feeds of the crowd. These guys go to every game, chanting for the team. Thomas Lyons even dresses up in a full blue man suit,” Raider Dad Kevin Walsh stated. “This team has a lot of talent. The boys deserve to move on to the finals.”

Mike Rempter, a junior at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School and a proud member of Raider Nation expressed his confidence in the team.

“I think they’re nervous, but ready. Our whole team is really strong and they have been on fire for the whole season. I think it will be a close game, but they definitely could win this,” Rempter said.
