Rutgers, Rowan Reschedule Move-In Dates

Students had been scheduled to arrive Sunday, but Hurricane Irene forces a change of plans.

Move-in day for students at Rutgers University-New Brunswick and Piscataway has been moved to Saturday, and all move-in activities at Rowan University in Glassboro scheduled for Sunday have been cancelled, according to university officials. Both changes are a result of Hurricane Irene, late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Gov. Chris Christie has declared a state of emergency in preparation for the storm.

Rutgers

"We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause you and your family, but given the likelihood of severe weather on Sunday, your safety must be our primary concern," Gregory S. Blimling, Rutgers vice president for student affairs, announced in an email to the campus community Wednesday.

Blimling said that a New Student Convocation that was scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday has also been canceled, as a result of the inclement weather.

"We ask that all new students try to arrange their schedules to move into their residence halls on Saturday, August 27, between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. If you are unable to move in Saturday, please do so on Monday, August 29, after the storm has passed and it is safe to travel," he said.

Rowan

The university has cancelled all move-in activities for Sunday, Aug. 28, school officials announced Thursday.

Upperclassmen living in Rowan Boulevard Apartments may move in by appointment on Monday, Aug. 29, or Tuesday, Aug. 30.

All other upperclass residents may move in on Monday, Aug. 29.

Residents of Rowan Boulevard Apartments and the Whitney Center must register for new appointment times. Previously scheduled appointments are not transferable and will no longer be valid. To register, go to www.rowan.edu/selfservice.

Freshman Move-In Day will be held as planned on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the large number of vehicles that will be on campus that day, the university urges all upperclass students to avoid coming to campus on Saturday.

“While a change this late is an inconvenience for students and their families, our biggest concern is that they arrive at Rowan safely," said Richard Jones, Rowan's vice president for student life. "Weather services are predicting unusually hazardous conditions in South Jersey on Sunday, and we feel cancelling Move-In Day is in the best interests of the Rowan community."

The university has more than 11,000 full- and part-time students.
