SP-F Town Councils to Meet on May 17

The combined Scotch Plains and Fanwood Council's Public Hearing on the school budget is set for Monday, May 17th @ 7:30pm in the High School Auditorium.

The combined SP-F Town Council's will meet Monday, May 17 at 7:30p.m. at the high school to address proposed changes to the school budget. Voters defeated the $74.9-million proposed budget on April 20.

Subcommittees from both towns have met with the superintendent and Board of Education to explore potential cuts. Members of the public will now have a chance to give their input about the new proposed tax levy at the public hearing.

A new tax levy will need to be passed on May 18, so the Councils could technically consider resident input after the May 17 meeting before voting on the resolution.

"Education has a direct effect on property taxes, has a direct effect on why people move to this town," Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr said this earlier this week. "The question is where to make the cuts that will have the least impact on the students."

The new levy will be presented to the BoE on May 19. If it is not approved by the BoE, it would go to the county executive superintendent for mediation.

"We understand that there's additional cuts to be made because that is the will of the people. They spoke loud and clear," Mahr told Patch in April.
