SPF Set for 2012 Spring Sports Season

A look at the season ahead for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders spring teams.

Baseball

After a respectable 2011 season and a JV team fresh off of a county championship, the SPF squad should be strong and feature plenty of depth in 2012.

Boys Lacrosse

The Raiders are set to begin their second season ever as a varsity program and look to use this year to take another step in the right direction. After an impressive opening campaign, SPF hopes to establish themselves as one of the top three or four teams in the county.

The team is also looking to advance deep into the county tournament and turn some heads on the state level after plenty of close games in 2011. The team is led up front by senior attacker Dan Nizolak who earned third team all-county last season.

The midfield will be led by senior Kevin Willis. The team's strength is its' defensive unit, led by returning junior starters Tyler Haack and Sam Brouse. Eight sophomores look to be key contributors including long stick midfielder Brian Heath, midfielder Thomas Walker and defenseman Justin Giacona.

Girls Lacrosse

The 2012 Raiders girls squad are also entering their second season at the varsity level and look to build off of a 8-10 season. The team returns nearly all of its starters including leading goal scorer Liz Schiller who put away 42 shots last season.

Sophomore Andrea McNeely connected for 27 goals of her own and junior Haley Regan put in 20 in an injury shortened season. Leading the way in the midfield is junior Jessie Klein who scooped up 48 ground balls last season. In net for the Raiders is sophomore Megan Welce.

The defense is led by two smart and athletic players who coach Rafferty calls "the unsung heroes of the group" and they are senior Allison Grimm and Allison Speck. The team is looking to continue proving and their schedule should provide great test throughout.
