Those Interested in Open Board of Education Seat May Now Apply

Applications are due by Oct. 20.

Today marks the first day in which Fanwood residents can apply to take over the open seat on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education.

In the board's official advertisement, it states that interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, along with a brief biography and their reasons for wanting to be on the board, to the board's secretary, Anthony Del Sordi, by 4 p.m. Oct. 20.

The open position comes after board member Sacha Slocum announced her resignation in late August, citing the demands of her new job as a vice principal at Plainfield High as the reason she preferred to step down.

Slocum attended her last meeting on Sept. 17.

Because Slocum held one of two seats reserved for Fanwood residents, anyone interested must reside in the borough. The position is in effect through April 2010, when it is up for the next school election.

The board has 65 days from Sept. 17 to appoint its new member. The board is slated to conduct public interviews with candidates at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27, and will make a decision after they are complete.

Those interested should submit their information to the Board of Education at 2280 Evergreen Avenue, Scotch Plains, N.J., 07076.
