Fanwood-Scotch Plains Gymnastics 'C' Team Opens Season with a Win
The team amassed a total of 104.35 points over the South Mountain YMCA.
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA 'C' division gymnastics team opened its season on Friday, January 22. With five of the members from last year's State Championship team either moving up to a higher level or moving out of state, this year's squad faced a daunting challenge. In its first meet, however, the team performed admirably, amassing a team total of 104.35 points to win the meet over the South Mountain YMCA.
In the 12 and under age group, Sydne Powers turned in solid performances on all four apparatuses to win the 1stplace ribbon in the All-Around. Powers also captured the 1st place ribbons on vault, bars, and floor exercise, as well as the 2nd place ribbon on balance beam. In the first meet in which she competed all four events, Abby Kennedy captured the 2ndplace award in the All-Around. Kennedy's performances on vault and floor exercise earned 2nd place ribbons while her new routine on the uneven bars secured the 4th place award. Teammate Morghan Johnson received 3rd place honors on vault and uneven bars, as well as 4th place honors on balance beam. In her first gymnastics competition, Kristy Cerini was awarded the 4th place ribbons on balance beam and floor exercise.
In the 13 and over age group, Rebecca Leonard won the 1st place ribbon in the All-Around, as well as on the uneven bars. Teammate Sara Rocha also enjoyed a successful competition, earning the 1st place ribbons on beam and floor exercise and the 2nd place ribbon on vault. Arielle Margulies won the 1st place award on vault and finished in 2nd place on both beam and floor exercise. In a return to gymnastics competition after a hiatus of several years, Marissa Lamastra was awarded 1st place honors on floor exercise as well as 3rd place honors on vault. Danielle Rosenblatt's fluid balance beam routine secured the 3rd place award on that event. In her first gymnastics competition, Naomi Porter turned in solid performances on both vault and balance beam to contribute to the team's victory.
