Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnasts Travel During Weekend Snow Storm to Compete

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains gymnasts received first place in several events on Feb. 9.


The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA.

This past weekend was a busy one for the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) Gymnastic Teams.  The “C” teams traveled through snowplowed roads to Somerset Valley YMCA on Saturday, February 9th and the “A” and “B” teams competed at Madison Area YMCA on Sunday, February 10th.

 

In the “A” Division, two Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA gymnasts competed in the Level 9 competition. Senior Zoe-Nicole Stein and Kacie Bumiller each had great meets. Awards were not presented that the Level 9 division but both gymnasts earned All Around scores clinching their qualification to compete at the 2013 National Championship meet in the Championship Division.

Paige VanBuskirk competed in the Level 8 competition in the 14 and 15 year old age group.  In the 16 and over age group, Abigail Fontana decisively captured 1st Place All Around.  Fontana also placed 1ston both Vault and Uneven Bars and 3rd on Floor Exercise.  Heather Mullen received 3rd Place All Around.  Mullen’s Balance Beam routine earned her 1st Place on that event and 3rd Place on Vault and Uneven Bars.  Lockfeld also received 2nd Place on Vault and Uneven Bars.  Marissa DiBella placed 3rdon Floor Exercise.

In the “B” Division, four gymnasts represented the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. Competing in the 12 and 13 year old age group, Abby Kennedy earned 2nd Place All Around.  Kennedy also placed 1st on Uneven Bars and 4th on Balance Beam.  Kristy Cerini was awarded 3rd Place All Around, as well as 2nd on Uneven Bars and 4th on Vault.  Brooke Vaccaro rounded out the age group for FSPY, placing 2nd on Balance Beam, 3rd on Vault and 4th on Floor Exercise.

 

Meghan Yessman competed in the 14 and over age group and placed 3rd on Vault. At the C Division meet on Saturday, at Somerset Valley YMCA, the FSPY gymnasts performed well, placing second behind the host team by only one point.  Competing in the 7-9 year old age group, Ava McKenzietook top honors All Around.  McKenzie also took 1st Place on Vault, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, with 3rd Place showing on Uneven Bars.  Lenore Ferguson took home a tying ribbon for 1st Place on Balance beam and 2nd Place on Vault. 

 

In the 10 and 11 year old age group, Anna Decker was awarded 2nd Place All Around.  Decker’s performances also earned her 1st place on Uneven Bars, and 3rd Place on both Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Che Dashiell also placed 3rd on Balance Beam and 4th on Vault.  Team mates Anina Dashiell and Zoe Wernsing tied for 4th Place on Balance Beam, with Tatiana Perea bringing home the 5th place ribbon on Balance Beam.  Nicalina DelRosario placed 6th on both Balance Beam and Vault.  Elizabeth Kern also competed for the FSPY team in the 10 and 11 year old age group. 

 

In the 12-15 year old age group, Rachel Tang won 1st Place All Around.  Tang also received 1st Placeon Uneven Bars and Floor Exercise, 2nd on Vault and 4th on Balance Beam.  Paige Hoblitzell was awarded 4th Place on both Vault and Floor Exercise.  Sara Banasiak captured 2nd Place on Balance Beam. Anya Szewczuk took home the 5th Place honors on Balance Beam.  Melissa Calabriarounded out the FSPY contingent in the 12-15 year old age group. 

 

The next home meet will be an “A and “B” Division meet on Saturday, February 23rd.  Summer Camp registration at the YMCA begins that day as well.  Camps at the Y include Gymnastic and Cheerleading camps, as well as full day camps and other specialty camps. Limited spaces are available for the presently running Early Spring gymnastics classes offered at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA include, parent-toddler and preschool classes.  Gymnastics classes for school-age girls are offered Monday-Saturday at the Martine Avenue facility.  This is a great time to begin taking gymnastics at the Y!  Birthday parties are also available.  Please call (908) 889-8880 for more information about gymnastics at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA.
