Follow-Up: Harmer Not Rehired, High School Searches for Replacement

As Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's principal interviews applicants, the its current athletic director prepares for a new job in New Providence.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School principal David Heisey is interviewing applicants for one of the high school's newest vacancies: assistant principal for athletics. 

Despite a large show of support from , the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education ultimately did not rehire Rob Harmer, its current assistant principal for athletics, last spring. Harmer will instead depart the district to begin his new job as athletic director for New Providence High School. When the school year ends June 23, it will have been Harmer's 11th year as Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's athletic director.

Heisey said that he hopes to find a new assistant principal for athletics by mid-summer.

"Interviews are taking place and we plan to have somebody in place July 1," he said. "Right now we're early in the process." 

He added that it was possible, though not likely, that the school would use an interim athletic director while the search for a full-time athletic director continued.

Heisey would not say how many candidates he has interviewed for the position, referring to confidentially restrictions."It's really a personnel issue,'' he said. But one name that did surface was former Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School athletic director Gene Schiller.
