FSPY Girls 'Black' Team Defeats Red Bank

The coach was particularly pleased with the development of its youngest competitors.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (“FSPY”) girls “black” swim team defeated the Red Bank YMCA girls “A” swim team on Nov. 21. FSPY’s 13-14 age group was dominant, winning their relay and finishing one-two in each of the five individual events.

Jodie Thompson (individual medley [“IM”], breaststroke) and Sarah Cronin (freestyle, butterfly) each won two individual events. Katy Comer won the backstroke and touched second in the IM. Second-place finishes were also earned by Molly Gaynor (back, fly), Carolyn Lesce (free), and Rosemarie Brigande (breast). Comer, Thompson, Gaynor and Cronin also formed the first-place medley relay in the 13-14 age group.

In the 9-10 age group, Erika Frazier won two events (breast, fly), posting personal best times. Julie Stankiewicz touched first in the IM and second in the backstroke. Micaela Valli and Natalie Jablonski finished second in the freestyle and breaststroke, respectively, each with personal best times. Valli also touched third in the butterfly, as did Emily Lockatell in both the IM and the backstroke.

FSPY backstrokers Maggie O’Connell and Casey Daudelin finished one- two in the 11-12 age group.  Amanda Banasiak finished second in both the freestyle and the breaststroke. Sarah Davis touched second in the butterfly. Amelia Markey joined O’Connell, Banasiak, and Davis to form the first place medley relay.

In the 15-18 age group, Hannah Markey won the IM and finished second in the breaststroke. Ellen Tomljanovic and Gabriella Levine finished second in the butterfly and backstroke, respectively.  Levine also placed third in the butterfly, as did Stephanie Baliko in the breastroke and Caitlin English in the freestyle.

The FSPY coaching staff was particularly pleased with the development of its youngest competitors at this meet – Sarah Arber, Allie Compton, Heidi Compton, Hannah Crisafulli, Lauren Davidson, Rachel DiFabrizio, and Sophia Iacona. Each of these “8 and under” swimmers posted personal best times in one or more individual events. Top three finishes were earned by Davidson (first in free and back), Iacona (first in breast, second in fly), and Crisafulli (third in breast).
