Local Basketball League Formed for Men 30 and Over

The league starts its season on Feb. 28.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Mens 30 + Basketball League held its first annual draft night Monday at Fanwood's Sun Tavern Restaurant.

Fanwood resident, league founder and commissioner Kevin Adams opened the draft introducing team captains Jamal Berry, X-Men, Rob Monroy, The Razorbacks, Marc Rogoff, Jersey Jammers and Dave Berger, The Clippers.

Adams formed the league with the help of FSPY sports director Ian Merson and the FSPY leadership to give the men who run a lot of the local youth leagues a chance to get outside themselves.

"Basically, the 32 men in the league need a workout," he said. "I mean, have you seen some of these guys? Actually, most of the men are local fathers who coach and volunteer to run a lot of the youth programming in the community. This league represents an opportunity for them to get a little exercise themselves, but more importantly set a positive example of competition, effort and good sportsmanship for the same kids they coach.  We really appreciate the FSPY recognizing the need and benefit of this type of programming."

In its inaugural season, the league is set to play a 9-game schedule beginning February 28 running through May 2 with a single elimination playoff to follow. Games are slated for the FSPY's Martine Avenue facility Sunday mornings between 10 a.m. and noon.

The league is comprised of four teams of eight players. Games will be 40-minutes running time with two 20-minute halves. For more information about the league, contact the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA at 908-889-8880.
