'Shoot For a Cure' Will Raise Funds for ALS Research

“Shoot for a Cure,” a 4 on 4 basketball tournament organized by college students Rory Szeto, 20, of Fanwood and Ezra Klemow, 20, of Scotch Plains in order to raise money to fund ALS research, will be held Sunday, August 4, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center on Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains.  

The general public is invited to participate.  The registration fee is $10 per person.  The deadline to register is July 27.

Klemow and Szeto raised more than $3,500 last year when they launched “Shoot for a Cure.” 

“After seeing how supportive the community was last year we’re excited to build on our success and hopefully raise even more money this year to fight ALS,” said Klemow.

Szeto’s grandfather died of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease nine years ago.  “Shoot for a Cure is a fun way to make a difference,” said Szeto.

The friends have been busy soliciting sponsorship, recruiting teams, organizing the details and enlisting support from their friends, families and neighbors. 

Male and female players, high school age and older, are encouraged to participate.  Individuals interested in playing can inquire about finding others to make a team.
