SP-F Bowling Team Remains Unbeaten

Nick Stawicki and Mike Tufaro were key to the victory.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood continues to impress as one of the top teams in Union County, remaining unbeaten after a 7-0 victory over Jonathan Dayton Regional High School at Jersey Lanes Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Mike Tufaro led all bowlers with a 703 pin total, topping off his day with a strong 265 in his third and final game. Tufaro, who bowled a career-best 300 game just last week, owns a 221 average for the season.

“It started off slow, a 205, but then I picked it up the last two games," Tufaro said. “We feel like, no matter what, we can beat or definitely put up a fight against any team here. We’re hoping for the best.”

“Excellent performance today,” added SP-F coach James Mason. “Very, very consistent, pleased with everybody, and once again, every game, somebody steps up.”

Meanwhile, teammate Nick Stawicki eclipsed the 200 mark in all three games, ending with a 247 on his way to 674 total pins.

“It was a good match, everybody shot well,” he said. “I wasn’t really expecting to shoot this high today, it’s a good series, above average. I’m just happy to see Mike (Tufaro) throw another 700 and carry the team. It’s a good way to go out before break.”

Katerina Nier rolled a 222 to open the match, while Greg Budis and Peter Citera added solid numbers to the overall total 3015 pins for SP-F, who are currently ranked 4th in the overall standings, behind Roselle Catholic, Linden and Roselle Park.

“We got the momentum," Stawicki said. “We had it from day one and I think we’ll be able to keep it through the end of the season. We’ve been getting better from the beginning. Everybody’s averages are going up. And everybody’s just doing their best to improve on what they need to."

When the new year rolls around, the Raiders will set their sights on the conference crown, and they have a bullseye on Union, ranked No. 7 with a team average of 753.

“They’re pretty good,” Tufaro said. “They have three really good bowlers. It should be a really good match."
