SP-F Javelin Wins Gold at East Coast Relays

Frank Mellana scored a personal best.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood javelin team won the gold, and the Union Catholic 4x800 team placed second, at Monday's East Coast Relay at Randolph High School.

The Raiders' senior Frank Mellana and junior Mike Tufaro combined to place first with a combined throw of 348-3. Mellana threw a meet and personal-best 199-5 and Tufaro threw 148-10.

Union Catholic's 4x800 ran a school record 7:48.95, led by a scorching 1:52.9 anchor leg. Evan Gingrich opened with a 1:59.2 and Allen Eke went 1:56.5 before the third-leg Kevin Mulligan ran 1:59.5. At that point, the Vikings were fifth. But Thornton, a Rahway resident, ran his blistering anchor leg to pull the team into a second place finish.
