Union Catholic FieldTurf Almost Complete

Workers started laying the green down last week.

Union Catholic has had to become something of a road warrior in the early going until its new FieldTurf is ready to go.

The girls' soccer team, for instance, opened Sept. 12 with a 6-0 win over St. Dominic Academy of Jersey City at Mount St. Mary’s field in Watchung, then won at Rahway Tuesday. The game against St. Dominic was a Union Catholic home game.

But they'll soon be playing on their new FieldTurf at home in Scotch Plains.

"They’re telling me, the last week in September, it should be ready,” coach Jim Revel said.

Workers started laying the green on the field last week. They've also made considerable progress on the track.

Union Catholic’s scheduled home date on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. against Hillside could be when the Vikings first play on the brand new field.

“That’s the date we’re shooting for,” Revel said.

Everyone at Union Catholic is excited about playing on the FieldTurf.

“Our field was horrible and the slightest bit of rain almost made it a swamp,” Revel said. “The fact that our kids go on the road now and play on a lot of turf, it will be good to have it our place, and I think it will make a huge difference. They’ll go out there now with a little bounce in their step. Anyone involved with UC soccer for the past 20 years knows that this is huge, just huge for the program. It’s a good thing.”
