Week of the Sports Rivals

A preview of the Westfield-SPF games this week.

It is one of the special scholastic rivalries in New Jersey: two athletically and academically successful neighboring schools.

Two extremely proud schools.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Westfield, who first met on the football field in 1901,
will meet once more Saturday afternoon in Scotch Plains. Game time is 1 p.m.

That meeting will come a day after the boys and girls varsity soccer teams meet for the second time this season. The girls will play at Kehler Stadium in Westfield, while the boys will meet at Wexler Field in Scotch Plains. Both games will start at 4 p.m.

The rivals are also going up against each other in gymnastics on Tuesday and volleyball on Wednesday.

The Westfield football team holds a 36-12-2 series advantage on the Raiders, who lost last year's game in Westfield 28-14. Since 2000, Scotch Plains-Fanwood holds a 5-4 edge in games.

Westfield will come into the game with a 2-2 record, while Scotch Plains-Fanwood will be trying to stop a four-game losing streak. The Raiders, who last beat Westfield in 2007, are 1-4.

The rivalry may be more intense in soccer. The Westfield boys and girls both beat
Scotch Plains-Fanwood in their first regular-season games Sept. 23 in front of big
week-day crowds. Both Blue Devils' team won 2-1.

This might be the second of three meetings. The the teams could also meet again in the Union County Tournament. The Westfield girls are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, while Scotch Plains-Fanwood is No. 2. The Westfield boys are No. 2 behind Cranford, while Scotch Plains-Fanwood is No. 3.

It's just another example of the schools being oh so close.
