Westfield Lacrosse Overcomes Slow Start to Trump Scotch Plains, 15-4

The Blue Devils defeated the Raiders on Monday at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.

In the first ever match-up between two towns with a storied rivalry, the Westfield boy's lacrosse defeated the first-year Scotch Plains varsity squad 15-4 Monday at .

The Records: Westfield entered Monday's matchup at 2-2 coming off of back-to-back losses to two of the highest-ranked teams in the state, Summit and Delbarton. Scotch Plains, in its first season as a varsity program, came into the game with a record of 1-3.

The Final Score: Westfield, 15-4, after a slow first quarter that left Westfield head coach, Marc Silbergeld, unhappy with his team, particularly the offense.

Westfield's second half offensive charge was lead by Jackson O'Leary, who set his season-high with four goals. Jonah Offitzer of Scotch Plains up a valiant effort in the loss, having a hand in all of his teams' points with three goals and an assist.

The Heroes: O'Leary was aided by teammates Nick Arnold and Matt Webb, who each piped in two goals for Westfield. Westfield also managed to dominate the face-offs, winning them 21-2.

Coach's Reaction: After the game Westfield Coach Marc Silbergeld said, "We did not come out and execute our game plan. Our game plan was to come out here and execute our plays, and we did not do that. I am a little disappointed with our offense. If we plan to compete with the upper echelon of New Jersey teams we need to execture better."

Silbergeld went on to compliment Scotch Plains' new program. "They were very well coached and disciplined and a very athletic team," he said. "They are going to develope into quite the program. This is sure to become quite the rivalry."

Who's Next?: Scotch Plains plays at Cranford Thursday at 4 p.m. Westfield plays at Chatham Wednesday.
