Learning and Living Our Faith

Mrs. Diane Schweizer’s first grade students have been learning more about the Church and their faith.  Sister Maureen Himchak, in residence at the St. Bartholomew Convent and an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Kean University, recently took the children on a tour of the church where she explained that going to church is like having friends over - we meet around the table which is the altar, we engage in conversations, listen to readings, and we sing songs to celebrate.  Sister Maureen explained the history of the church, the order of the mass, the items used, and the colors worn by the priests.  We are very thankful to Sister for spending her free time with the children.

Father David also recently visited the first grade classroom and read Strega Nona’s Harvest by Tomie dePaola.  After reading the story, Father David spoke with the students about taking care of the environment and sharing their extras with others.  To conclude, he led them in a prayer service.

Applying what they learned from their recent visitors, the first graders are answering a question this Advent: “If I was one of Santa’s Elves what could I do to help the world?” Their answers are posted in the hallway on the first floor, be sure to stop by and see their thoughtful responses.

We also want to send best wishes to Mrs. Delaney’s second grade students.  They are joining with second graders in the Religious Education program as they receive their First Reconciliation on December 14.  Please keep all the second graders in your prayers as they take these very important steps to becoming full members of the Catholic community.

This is our final installment before the Christmas holidays.  We wish you all a very, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
