Seventh and Eight Grade- God Bless Us Everyone!
Using the classic novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens the students will immerse themselves in Victorian England. They will learn the history, the culture and the social issues of the era. At the same time they will expand their vocabulary, enhance their reading comprehension and refine their writing and research skills. Over a six to eight week period Mrs. Schoendorf has various projects planned to meet these goals. The students will start by writing a research paper after performing a web quest and learning about the Victorian period, its famous people, and the issues of the day. They will then write their own fictional story about someone they may meet unexpectedly, like the various ghosts in Dickens’ story. They will also role-play and create conversations among the characters in the story. Using a movie version of the story the students will also compare and contrast the book with the movie.
This is the fourth year Mrs. Schoendorf has used A Christmas Carol to teach the Language Arts and English curriculum to the Seventh grade. By using such a familiar story, yet unfamiliar as many students have not read the book, the class will strengthen their reading and writing skills, which are critical to academic success.
It’s not all work though. At the end, the students will celebrate with a Victorian Christmas party complete with tea, scones, traditional games and Christmas crackers. What an enjoyable way to conclude the study of a classic.
