When the Saints Go Marching In and Marching Around Town

The Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, and Second grades celebrated All Saint’s Day by hosting a prayer service for the school after the All Saints Day Liturgy. In preparation for the prayer service, the students learned about twenty-five different saints, including St. Bartholomew, St. Lucy Filippini, St. Francis, St. Kateri Tekakwitha, and St. Dominic. Ms. Tanya Tone’s Pre-K students and Mrs. Dorothy Rotondo’s Kindergarten students dressed as saints. Mrs. Diane Schweizer’s first graders displayed a colored picture of a saint. Mrs. Pat Delaney’s second graders read a paragraph about a saint that they had written after researching their saint via a webquest. Upon completion of the prayer service, the children lined the aisle of the church and sang “When the Saints Go Marching In”. To conclude the All Saints Day celebration, the children enjoyed receptions in their classrooms complete with cupcakes with pictures of the saints on top. In addition to practicing writing and public speaking skills, the children learned that All Saints Day is more than a Holy Day of Obligation - it is a chance to learn how to act and live like a saint. The students will spend the rest of this month reading stories about the saints and each will have the chance to become a “Saint of the Day”.

To learn more about our community, the Pre-K and Kindergarten students have been out exploring. Last month, they walked to the fire house and, in the near future, they will be walking to a local bakery, the police station, post office, library, and rescue squad. As they explore our local community, they will be “building” a community of their own on the wall by the gymnasium. If you have a chance, stop by to take a look!
