Working hard in Pre-k

A major portion of the Pre-Kindergarten curriculum at St. Bartholomew Academy is phonemic awareness and reading readiness.  Each week in Ms. Tanya Tone’s classroom, the “Letter Fairy” visits and leaves a new letter to be studied.  As the students learn the sound of the letter, they also learn how to say and write them.  Along with these traditional lessons, Ms. Tone includes a lesson in using American Sign Language to sign the letter.  Our students are also learning how to use American Sign Language to say their names, the names of objects and people such as “mother” and “father”, and the names of places and activities such as “library”.  Ms. Tone feels that learning sign language at the same time as reading readiness skills enriches her students’ language, literacy, and concentration skills.  The students have shown great interest in learning how to sign and we are very proud of their efforts!
