Fanwood Presbyterian Collecting Donations for Haiti

Other groups are also still collecting for the effort.

Fanwood Presbyterian Church has announced that it is collecting items to help the people of Haiti.

Citizens can drop off the following items at the church's offices or in the parking lot sanctuary entry-way during office hours, which are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Hand towels measuring approximately 16" x 28" (no fingertip or bath towels); washcloths; wide-tooth combs; nail clippers; bars of soap (bath size in wrapper; toothbrushes (in original packaging); and Band-Aids.

The items will be gathered into one-gallon zipper-lock plastic bags for hygiene kits. Donations of these plastic bags are also welcome.

The church previously collected similar kits for the victims of the Asian tsunami, making nearly 265 at that time. Donations will be delivered to the Church World Service's drop-off center in Middletown, where they will then be shipped to Haiti.

Items will be accepted through Palm Sunday, March 28.

Other groups in the area also still collecting donations for Haiti, including the Jewish Federation of Central NJ. The organization has created an emergency relief fund, through which 100 percent of all donations will go directly to their partner agency, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) for their relief efforts on the ground in Haiti.

Donations will aid the victims and may be made directly online at www.jewishjerseycentral.org or by check to Jewish Federation of Central NJ, 1391 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076. Please indicate "Haiti Relief Fund" in the memo section of the check.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club has also been raising funds to go toward building "Shelter Boxes." On Monday, the group displayed one of these boxes at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood MLK Day of Service. Shelter Boxes consist of tents, sleeping pads, drinking water, blankets, cooking equipment, and sanitary resources in a 125-pound package capable of sheltering  ten people for a period of weeks.

Those interested in donating to the Rotary Club's efforts can contribute by dropping in at local PNC Bank locations on Martine Avenue in Fanwood and on Park Avenue in Scotch Plains.
