Lexi Marta Dives Head First into the Polar Bear Plunge

Read the update and the original story about Lexi Marta, 12, has raised $2,295 for the New Jersey Special Olympics before taking the Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday.

When arrived at the shores of Seaside Heights for the Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, February 25, the ocean water was 40 degrees. Despite the chilly temperatures, eager plungers celebrated on the beach. Some could even be spotted patrolling the boardwalk, clad head to toe in elaborate polar bear costumes.

“There were between 6 and 10,000 people there,” Lexi said. “When I got into the water, the crowd was so thick and everybody was towering over me. I had my toes in about two inches of the freezing water when all of a sudden everyone started running. I tripped and got knocked under water. It was so cold! My whole body was numb – I couldn’t move, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t breathe. My feet were so cold that it felt like I was walking on glass, but it was so worth it.”

After Lexi made her way out of the water, her mother, Melissa, wrapped her in a big blanket. Lexi then learned that she had raised $2,295 dollars for the New Jersey Special Olympics. According to those present at the registration table, Lexi raised more than any one single person has ever risen in the history of the Plunge.
