Patch Kid of the Week: Mallory Banks

In a new weekly column, Patch honors young scholars, volunteers, athletes and more.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Patch introduces a new column titled, "Patch Kid of the Week." Every Wednesday, we'll recognize a child from the township or the borough who has excelled in academics, community service, sports or other venues. To submit a nomination, email AlanN@patch.com. 

For our inaugural installment, we introduce Mallory Banks:

  • Whiz Kid's Name: Mallory Banks
  • Town: Fanwood
  • Age: 9
  • School: Third-grader at 
  • Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Mallory raised more than $400 through a bake sale she held last weekend for Autism Awareness Month, in support of her brother, Ethan. She is a 2011 Junior Autism Awareness Ambassador.
  • Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness: Mallory sold a majority of the baked goods – many of which were made and donated by neighbors and friends – at rec. soccer games at Evergreen Elementary School on Saturday morning. She made $270, but still had a number of delectable pastries, cookies and cakes left over. Joel and Michelle Abraham, rabbi and education director at  in Fanwood, invited Mallory to continue selling the items at Sunday School the following day. There, she raised an additional $148, for a total of $418.
