Scotch Plains Rescue Squad Opens its Doors

The squad welcomed the public as part of the National EMS Week.

The Scotch Plains Rescue Squad opened its doors to the community on Sunday as part of the national EMS Week initiative.

The event was designed to bring residents together with EMT volunteers to help raise awareness of the work they do and to honor them for that service. EMT and Fire Department personnel displayed the vehicles that they use during various emergencies on Sunday, while explaining how some of the equipment is used.  EMT volunteers also administered blood pressure screenings to raise awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure. Later in the day, the K-9 unit held an exhibition to display their dogs' abilities.

The Scotch Plains Rescue Squad Auxiliary was also on hand to raise funds with the sale of baked goods, the official Scotch Plains Rescue Squad cook book, and helping hand/heart dedications.

Jennifer Speth, the president of the Auxiliary, said that the funds would go toward a "thank you" dinner the Auxiliary was preparing in appreciation of the EMT volunteers' hard work.

Speth also emphasized the need for volunteers at the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, especially during daytime hours. Although all EMTs must be at least 16 years of age, the Auxiliary members can be as young as 14 and they are often well prepared for the transition to EMT when they turn 16.
