Police Merger Meeting, Newcomers Club Meet and Greet, SKY Yoga Opens This Week

What's happening in Scotch Plains and Fanwood this week.

SP-F joint police merger meeting: Scotch Plains and Fanwood councils will hold a joint meeting for a public discussion of the proposed merger of the police departments. The meeting will take place Monday,  at 7 p.m. in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School auditorium. There will be a presentation of the plan to date, followed by a question and answer period. This meeting comes after several executive session joint meetings between the towns.

Make new friends at SPF Newcomers' Club meet and greet: 
The Fall Meet & Greet on Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Forest Road Park Community Building is the club's big, annual, ladies-only event where they showcase club activities and interest groups, give away prizes from local businesses, and get to talk with other members and prospective members. The SPF Newcomers' Club, with approximately 100 active families, plans events and activities throughout the year for individuals and families during the day, evening and weekends.  

SKY Yoga opens in Fanwood: The new business at 222 South Avenue will celebrate its grand opening with a 9 a.m. ribbon cutting by Mayor Colleen Mahr on Saturday.

Write a compelling college admissions essay: 
On Monday at 7 p.m. at the Scotch Plains Public Library, Pamela Brownstein will advise high school seniors on the elements of a compelling college admissions essay, including topic selection, organization and grammar. An opportunity for one-on-one follow up will also be available. 

Check out the newest Oh' Brian's: On Friday, Clark's Hyatt Hills Pub (formerly Senorita's) changes its name to Oh' Brian's On the Green, completing the restaurant's new ownership by Fanwood Oh' Brian's owner's Brian Costello and Brian Walter.

See the Chamber of Horrors at All Saint's Church: An 
evening of performance and horror centered around the works of our greatest author of mystery, horror and imagination: Edgar Allan Poe. Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Enacted by professional performers in the atmosphere of a haunted house. Be prepared for the unexpected.

Create dog-themed necklaces with local artist Vicki Parker: Continuing our celebration of man’s best friend, local artist Vicki Parker has volunteered to return to the Scotch Plains Public Library on Wednesday to create dog-themed necklaces or magnets with adults and teens in grades 6 & up. This workshop will run from 6-8 p.m. Reservations are required.

Halloween family bike ride and Trunk-or-Treat in Clark's Oak Ridge Park: On Sunday at 3 p.m. Please decorate your bikes and trunks. Easy ride for all. All ages are welcome. Bring your family and friends. Rain or shine. To register for this event: www.komennorthjersey.org or call 908-277-2904.

Donate to the Junior Women's Club's annual coat drive: The group will be collecting new or gently used infant, children and adult coats only. They may be dropped off at the Scotch Plains Library on Bartle Avenue or the Jewish Community Center on Martine Avenue during their normal business hours. Donations will be distributed to local citizens in need. 

Breast cancer awareness blood drives:
Donate blood for breast cancer awareness  on Monday from 2-9 p.m and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the donation center at 2279 South Avenue, Scotch Plains. Every donor will receive a pink blood drop pin, pink arm bandage & Super Community Blood Drive wristband. Every donor will also be entered in a sweepstakes to win a pair of Super Bowl tickets. Check out Jumble Store week: The Jumble Store will be "Salebrating" its 80th anniversary of serving the community during "Jumble Store Week." Happenings include: Tuesday, Wine Cork Pull Sale and Candy Corn Contest; Wednesday, Extra Stamp Day, All shoppers making a purchase receive an extra stamp on their loyalty card; Thursday, Sip 'n Shop-4pm-6pm-Enjoy light refreshments while you shop; Friday, Buy one item, get another item for 50% off; Saturday, 10/26-Holiday Kick-Off Sale. The store is owned and operated by the Junior League of Elizabeth-Plainfield and serves to raise the necessary funds for the league's charitable programs.

Murder and Marinara at the SP Library: On Thursday at 7 p.m., the Scotch Plains Public Library is happy to welcome local author Rosie Genova to discuss her debut mystery book, Murder and Marinara, published earlier this month. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Scotch Plains Lions Club family breakfast: Enjoy pancakes, sausage, ham and beverages Sunday at 8 a.m. at Scotch Hills Country Club. $7 per person; children six and under free.

Fanwood Library jumble: Visit the library for a jumble of weekly activities to strengthen your  pre-schooler's early literacy skills each Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Sign-up takes place on a weekly basis, one week prior to each session. You may choose one or more sessions. For 3-5 year olds. This week's theme is "fabulous folktales and fables."

P.A.L. Basketball tryouts: Tryouts will take place Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the Terrill Road and SPFHS gyms. 

E-cycling at UC Vo-Tech: The County of Union will sponsor a recycling event for electronic equipment on Saturday, so Union County residents can get rid of unwanted computers, televisions and other electronic equipment in an environmentally proper manner. The special E-cycling event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Union County Vo-Tech campus located at 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains. All residents of Union County are eligible to participate at no cost. There is a limit of six electronic items per car.

Visit the Scotch Plains farmer's market before the season ends: The market runs Saturdays in the municipal building parking lot from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. through November.
