18th Annual Fanny Wood Day Street Fair This Week

What's happening this week in Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

Fanny Wood Day street fair returns: On Sunday, Fanwood will hold its 18th annual Fanny Wood Day. This event will be held on South Martine and South avenues from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. The streets will be transformed into a giant block party, with attractions for all ages including pony rides, petting zoo, kiddie rides, rock-climbing wall, live entertainment and a DJ, food, craft and new merchandise exhibitors and more. The car show will be back with old cars along with newer models. The event will also feature the 3rd Annual Photo’s of Fanwood Contest, a water balloon contest, an ice cream sundae eating contest, and a pizza eating contest.

Celebrate Banned Books Week at the Scotch Plains Library: 
 Banned Books Week, a week designated to celebrate everyone’s right to read and to access information, is September 22-28. On Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., the library will host a discussion of Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher. The  novel follows Clay, a high school student, as he listens to cassette tapes left behind by a classmate who has committed suicide, recounting the events that led to her death. In 2008, it was named to the Best Books for Young Adults list by the Young Adult Library Services Association. After stirring up much emotion and controversy, it was the third most challenged book in 2012, according the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom. 

Jewish Federation Youth Leadership night out: Beat It is a night out for young adults 25-45 presented by the Young Leadership Division of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ. The evening includes cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and dessert — and a special appearance by Drum Cafe. On Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Wilf Jewish Community Campus. 

Learn how to take great digital pictures at Be Craftful: International-award winning child and family photographer and Fanwood resident Carolyn Ann Ryan, is coming to Be Craftful on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will be teaching parents how to take better photos of their children.

Mitzvah showcase at Shackamaxon: Shackamaxon Country Club is hosting a Mitzvah showcase featuring a kids reception, adult cocktail lounge, interactive games and unique food stations on Sunday from 4 - 7 p.m.
