High School's 'Curtains' Mixes Mystery and Humor

The repertory theatre's spring performance debuts March 12.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High Repertory Theatre debuts its spring production of "Curtains" (The Musical Comedy Whodunit) tonight. Set in 1959 Boston, "Curtains" follows what happens when the untalented star of the show within the show, Robbin' Hood of the Old West, is murdered during her opening night curtain call. The production follows a police detective who moonlights as a musical theater fan to see if he can save the show, solve the case and find love before the show reopens, without getting himself killed. Students and directors put endless hours of hard work into the show, practicing four times a week for the past 11 weeks, said the high school's repertory theatre director John Brzozowski. "It's been the most challenging play in the…

The order of the ballot was selected during a drawing at the district's headquarters on Wednesday.

Current Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education member Amy Winkler will see her name at the top of the Fanwood section of the ballot come election day. At the district headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, Board Secretary Anthony Del Sordi shuffled all of the Board of Education candidates' names in a wooden box and then pulled them one by one to determine the order in which candidates will appear on the April 20 ballot. Each name was printed on a separate strip of paper and folded into a plastic toy capsule, then tossed into the box. Del Sordi started the drawing with the two open Scotch Plains positions, which are being run for by incumbents Nancy Bauer and David Gorbunoff. Their names will appear on the ballot in that order. Next was the…

Board of Education Receives More Specifics About Solar Panel Project

The project will cost an estimated $727,272.

Construction on the Terrill Middle School solar panel project could start as soon as next spring, if voters OK bonding for the plan this September. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District has been working on the project for over a year now, and last November gave Trenton-based architects Faridy Veisz Fraytak, P.C. permission to begin developing the plans. At last week's Board of Education meeting, the firm presented the specifics of what the project will entail, and what it will cost. Right now, the ultimate cost of the nearly 16,000 square foot panel system is estimated to be $727,272. About 40 percent of that money could come back by way of the state's debt service aid, and another $312,842 will be covered through the Customer On-site …

School District Budget Hearing to Be Held During Spring Break

The hearing will be part of a regular public meeting on March 31.

After going back and forth between several dates, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education determined Thursday that its public hearing on the 2010-2011 budget shall be held on Wednesday, March 31. Yes, that's right in the middle of the district's spring break, but Business Administrator Anthony Del Sordi said the district is required to hold the hearing  the week of the 29th. That inconvenience is partly what caused the board to have a difficult time deciding on the best date. Board member Donald Parisi noted that he would be out of town half of the week and Board member Karen Kulikowski said she was also unavailable on the 31st. The board had originally explored holding the hearing on March 30, but decided against it since it's the …

School District Could Get More Teachers

The possible increase is based on projected enrollment increases.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District may be getting an additional five teachers next year. During his second budget presentation to the Board of Education on Thursday night, Business Administrator Anthony Del Sordi reported that based on projected enrollment increases the district is looking to add one extra 2nd grade class and one extra 4th grade class at Evergreen Elementary; two additional 5th grade classes, one at each middle school; and one additional 6th grade teacher, who could essentially be redeployed throughout the day to staff basic skills and other courses. In addition, because of a projected slight decrease in enrollment in the 1st grade, the district could see the reduction of one 1st grade class at Evergreen and one at …

Why do you think our homes in Scotch Plains are worth more than Plainfield? One guess! Our schools our the most important asset we have. Not only do they give our children a great education, but they help keep our home values higher than most. And one of the most important ingredients in good schools like ours is smaller class sizes. When enrollment increases we need to add teachers to maintain …  more ›

Education Commissioner Defends State's Cuts to Schools

Bret Schundler discusses surplus freezes, possible reductions in state aid allocations.

Bret Schundler, newly sworn in as New Jersey's Commissioner of Education, defended the cuts in school aid already enacted by the Christie administration and warned educators Monday that more are on the way. Schundler, who spoke at the Garden State Coalition of Schools meeting at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School Monday night, centered the topic of conversation on the current financial state of education in New Jersey. Many districts represented received notice recently they would not be getting the remainder of the state aid they were expecting. For the Scotch Plains-Fanwood school district, $167,667 was cut for the remainder of this school year, with another 10 to 15 percent in state aid likely to be withheld from the 2010-2011 …
