SP-F High Baseball Field Not Ready for Season Start

The Raiders will likely have to play all of their April games away.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High baseball team – defending Union County Tournament champions - may not play a home game until May because of construction that is presently being done on the varsity field. According to seventh-year head coach Tom Baylock, the infield was dug up in February so that drains could be put in. "It's something that needed to be done, although the timing is not the best right now," said Baylock, who has guided Scotch Plains to its last two UCT crowns, including its third in 2004, which was during his first year at the helm. The Raiders are practicing at Park Middle School and will host their first scrimmage there Friday at 4 p.m. against Somerset County foe Hillsborough. Baylock hoped that the work that is being done…

SP-F Boys Basketball: What's in Store Next Season

The Raiders hope to repeat performances like they had in their game against Westfield on Feb. 4.

A glimpse into what could be the norm rather than the exception was realized in the final game the Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys basketball team played this season. Although the Raiders didn't win their only Union County Conference-Watchung Division game until late in the season and failed to qualify for the North 2, Group 3 playoffs despite teams getting in with records under .500 for the first time in awhile, Scotch Plains concluded its 2009-2010 season on a winning note, giving hope for the 2010-2011 campaign. Junior guard Patrick Dougher netted a career-high 22 points and leading scorer Charles Oliver, another promising junior guard, added 17 as the Raiders topped visiting Bridgewater-Raritan 62-58 in their Feb. 24 season-finale. Scotch …

SP-F Girls Basketball: A Look Ahead to Next Season

With the Raiders in a rebuilding situation this season, their performance next winter will largely depend on their work between now and then.

This year’s girls’ basketball Union County Tournament champion, repeat winner Roselle Catholic, went 7-17 three years ago, with freshmen who cut their teeth on the varsity level for the first time in 2007 helping lead the Lions to UCT titles in 2009 and 2010. This year’s Scotch Plains-Fanwood squad that finished 6-17 consisted of five freshmen, one sophomore and five juniors. One player – junior Becca Kreyer – literally cut her teeth in a conference game at Linden, but came back to play with even more gusto the rest of the way. Scotch Plains can look at what Roselle Catholic went through three years ago and determine what it took for the Lions to be as good as they were last year and this year after showing vast improvement two seasons ago…

Union Catholic Boys Basketball Team Fights Hard, But Comes Up Short in States

The Vikings finish with a winning record of 13-11.

As satisfying as it was for the Union Catholic High boys basketball team to get on a bus, travel to Morristown and then get back on that bus after defeating Morris County Tournament finalist Delbarton in its first state tournament game, it was as deflating for the Vikings to get back on the bus and head back to Scotch Plains after falling to one of the best teams in the state. In a Non-Public, North A quarterfinal matchup Friday night in Paramus, 12th-seeded Union Catholic was no match for fourth-seeded Paramus Catholic as the host Paladins rolled to a dominating 73-31 triumph. After Union Catholic junior forward Jamaad Nash made his only basket of the game to pull the visiting Vikings to within 7-5, Paramus Catholic closed the first …

Despite the loss, the SP-F High wrestler turned in an impressive season overall.

It's that time again - the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. A two-hour car ride, a season of top-notch wrestling, and a pass are all you need to get to this showcase for premier wrestlers across the state.  Scotch Plains-Fanwood High Senior Tristan Bundy made the trip as the lone competitor from the school, and at 35-2 on the season, he looked poised to take his regular season success to the top of a tough bracket.  Pitted against a formidable foe in Cresskill High School's 30-1 Senior Alex Preefer, Bundy ultimately came up short in a close contest at 125 pounds, falling to Preefer 7-6. Preefer would go on to lose in the next round to Corey Kozimor of Hackettstown 6-1, and the 125-pound champion …
