SP Fifth Grade PAL Travel Basketball Team Wins B Division

The fifth graders defeated Chatham, Berkeley Heights, Cranford and Westfield during the tournament.

The Scotch Plains Fanwood 5th Grade PAL Travel Basketball team participated in 2013 Clark Winter Tournament over three weekends and defeated Chatham 44-37 to win the 5th Grade B Division. During tournament play they defeated Berkley Heights, Cranford and Westfield.

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnasts Win Both Divisions in Final Home Meet

The gymnastics team held their final home meet on Feb. 23 and won in both divisions. Senior Zoe-Nicole Stein was honored at the end of the meet.

The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. Just two weeks since their last meet, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA "A" and "B" Division Gymnastic Teams hosted a meet on Saturday, February 23rd against teams from South Mountain and Somerset Valley YMCAs.   The home team won the meet in both Divisions.   This meet marked the final home meet for the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA teams only graduating high school senior this year:  Zoe-Nicole Stein.  The team honored Stein at the end of the meet and presented a bouquet of flowers.  Stein is a long-time member of the team, having begun in the Y Gymnastic program in preschool! In the "A" Division, both Stein and Kacie Bumiller competed in the Level 9 competition.    …

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball League Working Towards Playoffs

  The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. With playoffs looming and standing tight, it was a moving weekend in the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s League.   Game one ended with Double Dribble 74 and Fast Break 57.  In the upset special, balanced scoring by Double Dribble was the difference as Marlon Brown, 26, Chris Mattina, 24 (5 treys) and Eric Halpin, 19, were too much for the Breakers.  Fast Break got 17 and 13 from Jason Holley and Steve Lee but drop their second game of the season, now 7 and 2. Double Dribble improves to 4 and 5.   In game two, Courtmasters closed with 64 and Above the Rim with 56. Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Gymnasts Travel During Weekend Snow Storm to Compete

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains gymnasts received first place in several events on Feb. 9.

The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. This past weekend was a busy one for the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA (FSPY) Gymnastic Teams.  The “C” teams traveled through snowplowed roads to Somerset Valley YMCA on Saturday, February 9th and the “A” and “B” teams competed at Madison Area YMCA on Sunday, February 10th.   In the “A” Division, two Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA gymnasts competed in the Level 9 competition. Senior Zoe-Nicole Stein and Kacie Bumiller each had great meets. Awards were not presented that the Level 9 division but both gymnasts earned All Around scores clinching their qualification to compete at the 2013 National Championship meet in the Championship Division.    Paige VanBuskirk competed in…

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball League Continues Into Week 8

Court Masters, Hooptown and Fast Break win in Week 8.

The following information was provided by Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. Continuing with the electrifying play that has been exhibited, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s Basketball League hit week 8 of this 2013 season.  As the 6 teams jockey for playoff positions, 4 are tied for third place. In game one, Court Masters, 53 and Above the Rim, 29. Both teams came into the game running with thin benches, missing players. Court Masters jumped out early, taking a 26-16 halftime lead.  As the second half continued, Court Masters took advantage of Above the Rim’s weak zone defense, pouring in more debilitating 3-pointers, finishing with 7 buckets from behind the arc.  Court Masters was led by Jason Pompeo (22 pts, 12 rebounds), and Greg Gardner…

Scotch Plains Senior Zumba Classes Will Begin on Feb. 26

Registration begins on Feb. 20.

  The following information was provided by the Scotch Plains Recreation Department. The Scotch Plains Recreation Commission is proud to announce the next Senior Zumba session will begin registering on Wednesday, February 20th.   Senior Zumba will run on Tuesday and Thursdays beginning February 26th for 12 sessions from 10:15am to 11:15am at the Towne House in Green Forest Park.  The class will feature cardio, Zumba and some weight training.   Registration can be done in person at the Recreation Office, beginning at 8:30am on February 20th or completed online at www.scotchplainsnj.com and clicking on the “Community Pass” link and selecting the “2013 Winter Brochure” season.   Any questions or more information about the program can be …

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball League Continues Towards Playoffs

Here's a look at this week's YMCA Men's Basketball scores.

  The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s Basketball League’s season continues to get closer to the playoffs with Fast Break clearly leading the pack with only one loss with the majority of the teams all hovering around .500.  This week saw a tight game between Courtmasters and Double Dribble with Courtmaster’s recording their second win.  Got Skillz, Above the Rim and Double Dribble all dropped below 500 with uncharacteristic losses today. It’s starting to get interesting!   Game one ended with Hoop town 53 and Above the Rim 37. This game started out tight with Above the Rim leading at the half 22 to 21 but it was all HoopTown in the second half outscoring Above the …

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball Season Reaches Halfway Point

The following is a breakdown of the Men's Basketball mid-season mark.

  The following information was provided by the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men’s Basketball League hit the mid-season mark Sunday and the standings resemble the classic bell curve – one team on top, one on the bottom and the majority clustered in the middle.   Game one ended with Double Dribble,50 and Got Skillz, 33.  Double Dribble got 15 points apiece from Marlon Brown (10 assists) and Eric Halpin (8 rebounds) and 12 more from Chris Mattina.  Got Skillz, trying to overcome injuries and mixing new players, made a game of it in the second quarter but DD was perfect from the free throw line in the second half to preserve the win.   Game two finished with Above the Rim, 66 and Fast Break, 63.  In the upset …

Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball League Competes in Triple Header Day

Here's a look at the three games played in one day during the Men's Basketball 2013 season.

It is cold outside, but the action in the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA Men's Basketball League continues to heat up. As always, an entertaining three games were played in this 2013 season.   Game one ended with Court Masters, 70 and Double Dribble, 72 with little rebounding and defense, lots of offensive action was on display in the first game. Having much thrust with Jack Ryan's 23 first half points, Court Masters jumped out to an early lead 39-32.  In the second half, Marlon Brown continued his consistent scoring with help from Chris Mattina's four 3-pointers, as Double Dribble comes from behind to win 72-70.  High scorers were Jack Ryan (CM) with 39 and Marlon Brown (DD) with 30 points.    Game two closed with Fast Break with 75 and Hoop…

SPFHS Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer Teams Honored For Outstanding Seasons

Three resolutions were passed at the Jan. 17 council meeting to congratulate the Girls co-county champions and Boys county champion teams.

The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Boys and Girls’ Varsity soccer teams played outstandingly for the 2012 season, leading the boys to win the county championship and the girls to be a county co-champion. Since both teams performed so well this season the Board of Education felt it appropriate to honor their achievements in official board resolutions. The first two resolutions passed acknowledged the achievements of both teams wishing them continued success. A third resolution was also passed honoring Boys Varsity Player, Colin Stripling, for being named All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The 2012 Boys Varsity Soccer team won 19 games, lost 1 and tied three games this season. The team defeated Governor …
