SPFHS Division I Athletes Honored at Wednesday Morning Ceremony

On Nov. 21 three SPFHS athletes were honored for receiving scholarships for Division I athletics.

Less than 1 percent of high school athletes are offered Division I scholarships, according to Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School's Atheltic Director Ryan Miller. On Nov. 21 the high school held a brief ceremony to honor three of four athletes who have received scholarships to play a Division I sport. Christine Monroy and Colin Stripling will be heading off to college to play Division I soccer, while Stephen Pederson will be leaving in July to join the golf team at West Point. Last week, James D'Angelo also signed his official letter to play Division I baseball at Manhattan College. SPF Police Carry the Torch for the Special Olympics

SPF Police and student athletes ran in the Special Olympics torch run on Friday to raise money for a worthy cause.

Amidst the blazing midday heat and zooming traffic, members of the Scotch Plains and Fanwood Police Departments carried a torch for a very special cause, participating in a national Police movement to raise funds for the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics Torch Run was founded in1981 by Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon who saw an urgent need to raise money for the Special Olympics. In 2011, the Torch Run raised $42 million, making it the largest grassroots fundraiser in the country. Now, every precinct in New Jersey participates in the torch run with about 19 legs across the state. Runners in Cranford, Westfield, Scotch Plains and Fanwood participate in the Elizabeth to Princeton leg of the race. This year, Westfield …
