Harassment, Bullying, and Intimidation Report Presented at Board of Ed Meeting

At the Dec. 13 Board of Education Meeting, it was reported that Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying cases have dropped since the previous season.

Caitlin Taggart, the school district’s anti-bullying coordinator was present at the Dec. 13 Board of Education meeting to provide her bi-annual report on Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) cases. According to Taggart, Scotch Plains and Fanwood schools have seen a drop in both reported and confirmed cases of Harassment Intimidation and Bullying for January to June in comparison to the September to December report. Taggart said the HIB teams worked a lot on explaining to students and parents the differences between conflict and bullying throughout last spring. In her opinion, she stated this might be the reason for the drop in cases reported. During the period of January 2012 to June 2012, 97 cases were reported and investigated, …

Bullying will never stop. Look at most of the bullies and look at their parents ,same behavior. The moms are like a group of high schoolers in their own little clique and the fathers are just clueless or don't have the time to be bothered. When you are an individual having to go up against people like that it gets worse for your child and yourself, everyone is giving you mean looks. So if your …   more ›

POLL: Is It Fair To Judge Romney Based On His High School Behavior?

Former classmates of Mitt Romney have come forward with accounts that portray him as a high school bully, but we're wondering if you think it's fair to judge him on his alleged bad behavior.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!’’ Mitt Romney said that to his high school classmates about a boy, John Lauber, with bleached blonde bangs, according to a story in the Boston Globe. A few days after that statement, he allegedly "led a group of boys out of his dorm room at Cranbrook School and into Lauber’s, where the group tackled him and held him down. Romney cut his hair with scissors as a teary-eyed Lauber screamed for help."   Another highlight of his possible wrongdoing includes saying "Atta girl" every time a particular student that some perceived as effeminate or gay raised his hand.   Romney made a general apology, quoted from the Globe as, "If there was anything I said that was offensive to someone, I …

People tend to lose perspective by viewing past events through today's moral filter. If you grew up in the 60's and 70's you probably tried pot. As for bullying - things were brutal by today's standards, with name calling and fist fights a daily event in the school where I grew up (Staten Island 40 years ago). I think the media is gettting too carried away trying to find dirt. (Do we know if …   more ›

Meet Sasha Zitofsky: Fanwood's Rising Star

Patch sits down Park Middle School Student Sasha Zitofsky, who stars in the Anti-Bullying Theatrical Production: New Kid and Mom, Susan Zitofsky.

Alexander “Sasha” Zitofsky is not your average twelve year old. Sasha is an exuberant, witty, playfully sarcastic young man who has figured out what many adults are still struggling to find. Sasha loves to perform and wants to do it for the rest of his life. “If I was locked in a room for a day, I would dance around and work on my splits,” Sasha said. A home video shows Sasha performing an intricate, energizing dance routine to Lady Gaga’s smash hit “Telephone.” As he lights up the notoriously dusty and dim Park Middle School Auditorium the crowd cheers with delight.  That small glimpse of Sasha’s talent shines as a perfect example of his dynamic presence. Sasha has the kind of magnetic energy that helps audiences, friends, and strangers …
