FCC Approves AM Radio Station for Scotch Plains-Fanwod

Both mayors have been working to get an AM radio station up and running for mostly emergency related purposes.

The following information was provided by the Borough of Fanwood. The Federal Communications Commission has approved a license for a community access radio station to be used by Scotch Plains and Fanwood to broadcast emergency and other information. Both Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover and Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr announced they had applied for the license at their respective inaugurations on January 1, 2013. On February 16, 2013, the FCC granted the local community access license jointly to the two municipalities. The main purpose is to broadcast emergency information to citizens in the event of power, cable and other outages. Mara’s Café & Bakery to Open First Franchise Location in Fanwood

Mara’s Café & Bakery has been recognized regionally as the best coffeehouse, and has also won numerous awards for its desserts, sandwiches and more.

The following information was provided by Mara’s Café & Bakery. Mara’s Café & Bakery, a casual, family-friendly café, awarded its first franchise to Marci and Mark Semel of Fanwood, NJ to begin expansion beyond Morris County. The franchise is expected to open in April 2013 across the street from the Fanwood train station at 250 South Avenue. Update: PSE&G Outage Map Reporting Power is Restored

According to PSE&G's outage map, customers in Scotch Plains and Fanwood should have power restored as of 10:25 p.m.

Update, 9:45 p.m. The PSE&G Outage map is now reporting between 1-500 residents of Fanwood are without power. Original story, 9:30 p.m. Residents of Scotch Plains and Fanwood reported experiencing power outages a little before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening.  According to the PSE&G outage center, between 501 and 2,000 Scotch Plains residents are currently without power. Fanwood Resident Appointed Vice President of Development for State Theatre NJ

Anna Marie Gewirtz of Fanwood was appointed Vice President of Development for the State Theatre in New Brunswick.

Mahr Speaks to School One Students About Being Mayor

On Jan. 25 Mayor Mahr visited School One to talk to third grade students learning about local government.

The following information was provided by the Borough of Fanwood. On January 25th, Mayor Colleen Mahr visited School One to speak to the Third Grade students of Mrs. Duffy, Mrs. MacDermant and Mrs. Segotta.   She gave the students first hand knowledge of the role and responsibilities of being Mayor.   The students were learning about local government and it was an excellent cumulating activity.

Fanwood Blotter: D.W.I. Arrest Made on South Avenue

The following information was provided by the Fanwood Police Department. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

The following information was provided by the Fanwood Police Department. On February 3, 2013: At 2:20 a.m. a Fanwood police officer made a motor vehicle stop at Old South Avenue East and South Avenue for a motor vehicle violation. While the Officer was speaking with the driver he could detect an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. The Officer asked the driver to exit the vehicle for some field sobriety tests. The driver was unable to complete the tests and was placed under arrest. The driver was charged with D.W.I. and released to a responsible person. The defendant is Denise Quinto, 42, from Somerset.
