Storm Update Oct. 30 9:00pm Message from Mayor Mary DePaola Police and Emergency and DPW crews are out and clearing streets. In order to expedite clean up and recovery efforts; I encourage our residents to limit travel so that clean up crews can clear our streets. I caution all to beware of fallen trees and branches which might possibly have brought down live power lines. PSE&G have crews out and are restoring power based on priority levels. The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders has issued the following alerts and updates for residents seeking emergency shelter: “The Union County Medical Reserve Corps has been activated and is working with the Red Cross, Salvation Army and local officials to ensure that emergency shelter is available to all who need it,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “If you plan to use a shelter, please take steps to make your stay more comfortable for yourself and those sheltering with you.” To use a municipal evacuation shelter, use the non-emergency phone number for your local police department. All county buildings and offices will be closed on Tuesday.
Due to the approach of Hurricane Sandy, the County of Union has declared a State of Emergency from 6 p.m. tonight to 6 p.m. tomorrow night, county officials said in a press statement at about 4 p.m. Monday. All County buildings and offices will be closed and only essential personnel and emergency responders will be required to report to work. Also, a total of 13 municipalities have declared states of emergencies including the following municipalities: Roselle, Rahway, Clark, Winfield, Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Mountainside, Springfield, Cranford, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Linden and Roselle Park. The following information was provided by the Mayor of Fanwood. Mayor Colleen Mahr has just received the latest information from Governor Chris Christie and his Cabinet on Hurricane Sandy. Landfall of the storm is expected tonight in southern New Jersey. Statewide, we can expect wind gusts of 60-70 MPH and 4-10 inches of rain. These conditions are expected to bring widespread power outages caused by flooding and downed trees and limbs. As long as sustained winds are above 40 MPH, utility crews will NOT make repairs because it's unsafe. Thus, residents are asked to be patient if they don't see crews immediately. The following information was provided by the County of Union. The Union County Medical Reserve Corps has been activated to staff a regional shelter at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Ave. in Cranford. The shelter is accepting pets, however, owners must bring crates for animals, food, and litter and any waste disposal bags, etc. for their pets. If animals pose a threat they will have to be removed. Limited food and water are available for people. No medications will be available. Those in need of the shelter are advised to bring their own medications, any personal hygiene items, etc. Also, a regional Special Needs/Functional Needs Shelter is located in nearby Middlesex County at: the Woodbridge Community Center, 600 Main St. …
