SPF Lays Out Anti-Bullying Programs

District plans training and surveys to help students deal with those being bullied — and the kids who pick on them.

As part of a statewide initiative against bullying in schools, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District hosted a forum to inform the community about the measures it has taken against bullying, as well as measures for preventing bullying in the future.  The forum, led by District Anti-Bullying Coordinator Cailin Taggart, covered steps the district has taken — including the addition of her position — that is meant to curb bullying and prevent incidences in the future, she said.  In the past year, the district has assigned anti-bullying supervisors in each school, developed recording keeping systems for bullying incidences, training for the entire staff and held parent and community education about the steps the district has taken.  Taggart …

Terrill Middle School to Participate in Anti-Bullying Program

The SPF Board of Education approved a program designed by Princeton University, issued proclamations for art awards.

Terrill Middle School will be participating in the Roots Program, a Princeton University program meant to curb bullying and harassment in schools. The program will be utilzed at the middle school level by evaluating the school's social climate.The Board of Education approved the use of this program at Thursday's reorganization meeting. The program, supported by the New Jersey Department of Education, is a year-long research study that provides the middle school with an HIB (Harrassment, Intimidation, Bullying) strategy catered to the school environment, feedback on the effectiveness of the program, and suggestions for further HIB programs.  The Roots Program is a program designed to create grassroots, ant-bullying movements among students …
