JCC of Central NJ Will Host Fifth Annual 'Come A.L.I.V.E. Day' - April 28

The event is an annual day of community service for teens.

The following information was provided by the JCC. On Sunday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the JCC will host the 5th Annual Come A.L.I.V.E. in the Community, a day of community service for all teens in 8th – 12th grades.   On this day, teens will have the opportunity to volunteer in their community in a variety of ways. A.L.I.V.E. stands for Alliance, Leadership, Involvement, Volunteerism, Energy and was formed when teens from the Jewish Community Center of Central NJ and the I Have a Dream program at Plainfield High School worked together and participated in programs that taught them to be responsible, involved and active adolescents in their respective communities.  This group of teens coordinated the first Come A.L.I.V.E. in …

JCC Hosts Fourth Annual University Lecture Series

The series will be held at the JCC on March 7,11 and 19 from 7:30p.m. to 9p.m.

The following information was provided by the JCC of Central Jersey. The fourth annual University Lecture Series at the JCC is back on March 7, 11 and 19. All sessions are from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the JCC, 1391 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains.  The JCC’s lecture series is intended as a vehicle for intellectual conversation and stimulating debate about topics of Jewish content and/or relevance.  This year’s series is presented in partnership with The University of Pennsylvania, New York University and Princeton University. “We have a great line-up this year,” said Larry Pargot, program chair.  “We certainly hope that people come out to hear these dynamic speakers.” The first lecture, on Thursday, March 7, is “Figuring Out Jewish Culture from…

JCC hosts Biography of Jews in the U.S. for Seniors and Active Adults

The series of dicussions will run from early March through April.

The following information was provided by the JCC of Central Jersey. Starting early March and running through April, the JCC of Central NJ will host a series of discussions for Seniors and Active Adults entitled A Biography of the Jewish Community and the Development of the U.S.  The first two sessions are scheduled for Monday, March 4 and Monday, March 11 from 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. at the JCC, 1391 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains. This series will be led by Irwin Katz, former educator and guidance counselor.  After serving as a guidance counselor for 23 years, Katz went on to teach junior high school social studies at both public and Jewish schools.  He has also served as a docent at the Rockland Holocaust Museum. JCC Preschoolers Participate in Charity for Hurricane Sandy Victims

The JCC of Central NJ’s Early Childhood Department focuses on post-Sandy charity.

The following information was provided by the JCC of Central Jersey. The JCC’s Early Childhood Department has always included the concept of “tzedakah” or charity in its curriculum.  This school year has been no different – the school’s 4s classes all had an opportunity to learn about charity and helping others in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.  Five classes of 4-year-old preschoolers were motivated by all the local devastation they saw after Sandy.  They started by making their own tzedakah (charity) boxes in which they could collect their charitable contributions which they earned by doing chores or “good deeds” in their homes.  Some of the children set the dinner table; some cleaned up their toys; one child said his good deed was …

JCC of Central New Jersey Appoints New Executive Director

Jennifer Mamlet of Westfield will serve as the JCC on Martine Avenue's new Executive Director.

The JCC of Central Jersey recently hired a new Executive Director who formerly held the position of Senior Vice President of Development at the Advertising Council. Jennifer Mamlet took the reigns Jan. 14 as the JCC in Scotch Plains’ new executive director. Mamlet started her career as a social worker and also served as the Director of (Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education (S.C.O.P.E). As the director of S.C.O.P.E, she headed the fundraising for summer camps, which served underprivileged children. “Jennifer is a great fit for our JCC,” said Robin Brous, the JCC’s Assistant Executive Director and Early Childhood Director in a press release.  “As an integral part of our community, our JCC must always provide excellent, relevant …
