The following information was provided by Willow Grove Presbyterian Church. On Sunday, February 10, we invite the community to our seventh annual Willow Grove Presbyterian Church Mardi Gras Jazz Worship Service beginning at 10:00 am at the church in Scotch Plains. A delicious brunch will follow the service. Willow Grove Church's Pastor, The Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney, gives perspective on the celebration. "Although the current traditions of Mardi Gras in New Orleans seem far from a Christian celebration of God's love for humanity in Jesus Christ, we can reclaim those religious roots and enjoy the rich musical traditions of jazz, gospel and spirituals that give a voice to our faith." On Jan. 27 The Dixie Mix Dixieland band will perform a jazz concert at Willow Grove Church in Scotch Plains.
The following information was provided by Willow Grove Church. The Dixie Mix Dixieland Band will perform a noon time Jazz Concert on Sunday, Jan. 27 at Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains. Included in the price of admission is a lunch with pulled pork sandwiches, beverages and dessert. Lunch will begin at 11:30 am downstairs in the church fellowship hall with the concert at approximately 12:30 pm in the sanctuary. Admission to both lunch and the concert is $10 for adults and teenagers, $5 for children from 5 to 12 years old, with a one family maximum of $25 and no charge for children under 5 years old. Ware, a well known free jazz player throughout New York City, passed away on Oct. 18 due to complications from a previous kidney transplant.
David S. Ware, a saxophonist who helped lead the resurgence of the free jazz movement in New York City, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 18 in New Brunswick, NJ. Ware was born in Plainfield, NJ but grew up in Scotch Plains and attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. He later went on to attend Berklee College of Music. According to Wikipedia, he resided in New York City for 14 years while working as a cab driver. He later moved back to Scotch Plains. Suffering from kidney disease, at age 60, Ware received a kidney transplant from one of his fans. The donation followed an email sent out to over 1,000 of Ware's fans. The Scotch Plains & Fanwood Arts Association will hold its 46th Annual Members Art Show at the Scotch Plains Fanwood Library’s Gallery from March 31, 2012 to April 28, 2012. The Arts Association is a group of local artists who meet four times a year for workshops or demonstrations at the Patricia Kuran Cultural Arts Center in Fanwood. Original works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, photography, graphite/pencil, and mixed media will be exhibited.
