The fourth annual MLK day of service will feature a variety of volunteer opportunities for children, teens and adults throughout Scotch Plains and Fanwood.
On January 21st Scotch Plains and Fanwood will hold the fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Since there will be a half-day of school in the district this year due to Hurricane Sandy, many of the events will take place in the afternoon. At 12:30 p.m. the day will kick off at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA with a drop-in lunch and fair. The fair will have a variety of informational booths on Martin Luther King Jr. and pizza provided by Nick’s Pizza for 2 dollars a slice. Nick’s Pizza is will be donating 50 percent of the profits made to MLK Day. According to a press release, last year’s event drew over 1,000 volunteers. “This year’s goal is to further establish the event as an important day in our community,” the release …

The numbers are in! 1000 volunteers turned out for SPF MLK Day of Service. There were between 500 and 700 volunteers at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA activities alone. Volunteers of all ages collected donations, baked, sewed, danced and performed to make their community a better place. "Over a 1000 volunteers planned, ran and volunteered today," co-founder Michelle Shapiro Abraham said. "St. Judes had to close their open event because over 100 people turned up to make over 300 goodie bags. 5 huge bags were collected for Second Chance Toys, 250 bags of pretzels for Meals on Wheels and 1200 Valentines were made for Veterans." Volunteers of all ages gathered in the gym at the JCC on a gorgeous Martin Luther King Day to kick off a day of volunteering that drew hundreds upon hundreds to locations in Scotch Plains and Fanwood. "We started the day of service to make this a day on, rather than a day off, volunteering to make our home a better place," Co-chair and co-founder of SPF Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Michelle Shapiro Abraham explained. Local neighbors, family, friends, girl scout troops, students, local charities and more listened to remarks by local officials and heard three musical numbers from the Scotch Plains Fanwood High School Choir.
