To the Editor: Many thanks to the entire Fanny Wood Day Committee for staging the successful 17th Annual Fanny Wood Day held this past Sunday. Led by co-chairs Steven & Jason Parker of K-9 Resorts, the team made this tremendous undertaking look effortless. Our hometown was on full display this entire weekend, kicked off with Friday’s reception at the Pat Kuran Cultural Arts Center where local photographers displayed their entries in the “Fotos of Fanwood” contest. And on Saturday, residents had to smile as Fanny Wood Day made the front page of the Star Ledger with “Missing Persons Got Nothing on Fanny”; an amusing take about our legendary Fanny Wood. On Sunday Fanwood was looking her very best as upwards of 15,000 enjoyed our …

To celebrate the newly renovated LaGrande Park, Fanwood residents kicked off the season with celebration and ribbon cutting.
Basking in the shade of a majestic new 30-foot by 44-foot wooden-arched, open-air pavilion, dozens of locals kicked off the summer season by enjoying the multitude of beautiful new renovations at their favorite summer spot. The Party in the Park began at 5 p.m. yesterday, with a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the new features at 6:30 p.m. Fanwood Mayor Mahr, Union County Freeholder Chairman Al Mirabella and other local officials were on hand to celebrate the new face of LaGrande Park. As locals explored brand new foursquare and basketball courts, little ones rode a mechanical ball, climbed a rock wall, adorned fake tattoos, and enjoyed exhibits from the Trailside Nature Center and the local Butterfly Garden. As we come together in our time-honored tradition of attending our beloved Memorial Day Parade on Monday May 28th, we should thank the SPF Memorial Day Parade Committee for their efforts, in particular Fanwood resident Bobby Camisa, Councilman Anthony Parenti and Scotch Plains Councilman Kevin Glover. This year marks the start of a new tradition of paying tribute to the men and women who have served in the armed forces by presenting a patriotic concert on Sunday May 27th on the north lawn of our historic train station. I hope you will join me and my family as the Westfield Community Band plays those stirring songs that remind us of our pride to be living in the United States of America. T his free concert is a reminder that Memorial Day is…

Scotch Plains Officials release separate statements supporting merger plan, touting cost savings without compromising police efforts.
It has been years since local officials first began discussing a shared-service agreement to merge Scotch Plains and Fanwood police forces. Now, Scotch Plains officials are speaking out in favor of moving ahead with a plan to unite the two police departments. In a statement written to Patch, Deputy Mayor Mary DePaola and Councilman Bo Vastine expressed their support for moving forward with merger talks, noting that there are two options for merging police forces — a "joint meeting" or a contractual shared-service agreement. “At this point, we believe either choice gets us to where we want to be — a Police Department that protects and serves both communities efficiently, ending redundancy, and saves the taxpayers money,” the two said. “Any …

For Mayor Colleen Mahr, Councilman Russell Huegel and Councilman Kevin Boris, New Year’s Day offered a bright and boisterous beginning to 2012. The Democrats swept local elections this year, with Mayor Mahr taking 70 percent of the vote. Members of the community, local officials, fire fighters and cherished family lined the walls and squeezed into every available seat with some even packed in the entrance way, hoping to catch a glimpse of Fanwood’s newly minted and renewed members of government. Councilmen Russell Huegel, who will now also service as the Borough Council’s Vice President, was accompanied by his daughter Joss, who sat patiently on her father’s knee, a curious expression upon her face as she observed the proceedings. “This …
