New Gym to Open On North Avenue This March

Chiseled Health and Fitness in Plainfield will serve power and olympic lifters, as well as those just looking to take classes or work on cardio.

Coming to North Avenue in Plainfield this March is Chiseled Health and Fitness, a three room gym of over 6,000 square feet which will serve a very niche audience of power and Olympic lifters, as well as those looking to get fit in separate areas for cardio and group classes. Hiroshi Powell of Plainfield and his partner Karen Burke of Hackettstown came up with the concept for Chiseled Health and Fitness over two years ago and it has been a work in the making ever since. "It's worth waiting for because we know how great it is going to be," Burke said. The gym will feature three distinct areas; a 4,500 square foot area for weight training, a 750 square foot cardio room and 1,200 square foot “party room,” as Burke calls it, for group classes …

Police Chase through Union, Somerset Counties Results in Arrest Friday

The following information was obtained through the Berkeley Heights Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

A Plainfield, NJ man was arrested Friday morning as the result of a police chase through Berkeley Heights, Watchung, Scotch Plains, and Plainfield. Desmond Pratt, 44, was charged with receiving stolen property, eluding a police officer, possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Berkeley Heights Lt. Frank Fortunato. On Friday morning, Berkeley Heights Ptl. Andrew Glaydura was monitoring traffic on Plainfield Avenue when he ran the license plates for a 1995 Chevy Tahoe through the N.J. Motor Vehicle Commission. He found that the vehicle was reported stolen from Newark on Monday, July 23. Glaydura attempted to stop the driver, Pratt, near Bonnie Burn Road and Valley Road in Berkeley Heights. Three SPF Girl Scouts Honored with Gold Awards

The Gold Award is the highest achievement a girl scout can receive. This spring, Lindsey Wilkinson, Carly Whitmer and Abigail Slaugh received this prestigious award for their contributions to this community.

Fanwood-Scotch Plains Girl Scouts gathered May 29 to honor girls who had achieved the organization’s highest awards, and to mark the passage of Girl Scouts in the class of 2012 from high school to adulthood. Three girls from Fanwood-Scotch Plains earned the Gold Award this year. To earn the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, a girl must complete a series of prerequisites then design and carry out a Gold Award project which uses her talents and strengths to address a need in the community which she personally cares about. The projects carried out by this year’s recipients reflect their varied interests. SP Community Garden Needs a Helping Hand

Volunteer at the Scotch Plains Community Garden today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Read on to learn more about this valuable resource that feeds hundreds in Union County.

This summer, the Scotch Plains Community Garden will feed as many as 250 local families and it all starts now. Today marks the first planting day at the Homefirst community garden at 1632 Mountain Avenue, Scotch Plains. All are invited to enjoy the sunshine and plant the first seedlings that will grow into fresh produce for the homeless, disabled and seniors in need throughout Union County. This annual grand opening is open to all from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.  “We opened the first community garden outside our Family Success Center in Plainfield in 2009 because we recognized the growing need to provide fresh produce for the families we serve in Union County,” Homefirst Executing Director Ellen McGovern said. “Purchasing fresh …
