Update, 9:45 p.m. The PSE&G Outage map is now reporting between 1-500 residents of Fanwood are without power. Original story, 9:30 p.m. Residents of Scotch Plains and Fanwood reported experiencing power outages a little before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening. According to the PSE&G outage center, between 501 and 2,000 Scotch Plains residents are currently without power. Also, the map reports no outages for Fanwood residents. Due to a transformer fire, a section of Fanwood experienced brief outages on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, Dec. 9 a section of Fanwood north of North Avenue experienced brief power outages. The outages were caused by a transformer fire at Forest Road and Montrose Avenue. In an email sent out by the Borough of Fanwood at 8:50 a.m., PSE&G was on scene and working to resolve the problem. PSE&G was able to restore power to the area within the hour. They're almost there, said the PSEG president in what will be the last of the hurricane media conferences.
It's day 12 since Hurricane Sandy hit, and PSEG has hit a milestone. The company says it has restored electricity to 98 percent of their customers in their service area, and they're hoping to make it 100 percent by Saturday. Ralph LaRossa, president and chief operating officer of the company, said in a media update conference call -- the last he hopes he'll be having to discuss Hurricane Sandy and the nor'easter that tore through the area Wednesday -- that even with service restoration, the work isn't over yet. He gave a big thanks to the 4,500 linemen who poured into New Jersey from all over the country to supplement PSEG's own crews. The utility is saying that customers who lose power may be without it for a week or more.
PSE&G is reporting about 4,000 customers without power in the early stages of Hurricane Sandy. The majority – about 3,000 – are located in the utility’s southern counties of Mercer, Burlington, Camden and Gloucester. The utility provides electric service to 2.2 million customers. The utility is urging customers to prepare for the possibility of lengthy outages – perhaps seven days or more -- due to the enormity of Hurricane Sandy, which forecasters predict may become the worst storm to hit the Northeast in 100 years. It may take until Wednesday until a full assessment of the storm’s damage can be made and the utility can more accurately predict when full restoration can be made. Residents should be prepared for power outages of up to 10 days from the anticipated impact of Hurricane Sandy, according to a release from the parent company of JCP&L. FirstEnergy Corp, which owns the local utility company along with several others on the East Coast, said in a release that the oncoming storm could wreak havoc with the electrical system and residents should be prepared to be without power for more than a week. Stresses storm may knock out power for 7-10 days
Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) President Don Lynch says the company has learned from the mistakes it made from Hurricane Irene and is ready for Hurricane Sandy and the threat it poses to the state. The company took heat when Hurricane Irene left many New Jersey towns without power for days - and, in some cases, weeks. Many thought JCP&L's response was too slow. The biggest lesson learned is getting the information out to customers and municipalities as specifically, quickly and often as possible, Lynch said. The company wants its customers to know as much information as possible, he said. Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Cranford, Clark, Mountainside, Scotch Plains, Springfield, Westfield and Fanwood experienced power outages in the aftermath of the evening thunderstorms.
Update 12:00 a.m. July 27: JCP&L is reporting no outages in Berkeley Heights and New Providence and less than 5 in Springfield. PSE&G continues to report between 1-500 outages countywide, scattered throughout 11 towns including Clark, Cranford, Fanwood, Mountainside, Scotch Plains and Westfield. Update: By 10:30 p.m. the number of outages being reported in Union County has drastically diminished, with between 1-500 PSE&G customers throughout all of Union County affected (Westfield is now included in towns experiencing outages). Residents of Scotch Plains experienced power outages last night, due to overhead wire failure. The outage was likely caused by a downed tree resulting from yesterday’s severe storms. Sections of East 2nd Street and surrounding blocks between Park Avenue and Terrill Road lost power just before 5 p.m. About 10,000 PSE&G customers statewide lost power yesterday, according a PSE&G press release. Restoration time for the area was estimated for 9:58 p.m. on the PSE&G hotline. However, power was restored to some residents by 7:00 p.m. PSE&G representatives were unable to provide any more information on Scotch Plains outages as of last night.
