Raiders Fall 10-8 in Union County Baseball Semifinals

Scotch Plains-Fanwood fell to the Union Farmers 10-8 in extra innings.

In a back and forth contest that saw each team overcome a three-run deficit in the final two innings, the No. 8 Union Farmers outlasted the No. 4 Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders 10-8 in eight innings. Chris Ciccarino started the game for the Raiders and went five and a third allowing four runs before being relieved by Chris Gibbons who finished out the sixth inning giving up an earned run of his own. Trailing 5-2 the Raiders responded with a six-run rally that put them three outs away from a spot in the county finals. Scotch Plains loaded the bases with a leadoff walk from James D’Angelo (2 R, 2 RBI), a single to right center from Kevin Maxwell and another walk by pinch hitter Dylan Sands.  Union starter Mike Meola seemed poised to escape …

Brewster Wins 500th as Westfield Rallies in Extra Innings

The Westfield Blue Devils rallied from a six-run extra innings deficit to give their coach a milestone victory for the ages.

After waiting nearly 10 months for another shot at his 500th career victory, Bob Brewster’s squad rallied from a five-run tenth inning deficit to earn an 8-7 extra innings victory over the Scotch Plains Raiders. Jon Gribbin’s two-out, two-strike, walkoff double drove in two runs and sealed the landmark victory for his head coach. Gribbin began the inning with a walk after getting hit by a pitch and ended it with his game-winning blast to deep left centerfield. “The nice thing was that we got it on the second shot and it wasn’t four or five games,” said Brewster. “And just get it out of the way.” It appeared that Brewster would have to wait several more days when the Raiders put a five-spot on the board in the top of the tenth to take a 7-2…

SPF Set for 2012 Spring Sports Season

A look at the season ahead for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders spring teams.
