An Ocean City resident writes that a Scotch Plains man saved her neighbor's child from drowning.
To the Editor: I am writing you because at about 4 p.m. on July 3, I wiitnessed a concerned teacher carry out a remarkable act of kindness and I feel this man deserves to be recognized. While I was on the beach in Ocean City, I witnessed a man enter the water to aid 9 year old boy who was having trouble getting from the beach to a sandbar between 30th and 28th Streets in Ocean City. The boy was Luke, my neighbors son. I learned that the man was Mr. Bill Liebiedz, a substitute teacher in Watchung and Greenbrook. There is a good distance between the life guard stands making it unlikely they were able to comprehend the amount of danger Luke was in. Luke was caught in a slough between the shore and sand bar and was having difficulty …

In a whirlwind of arrests last week, seven out-of-towners were arrested for an active warrants.
Arrests Robyn Simpson, 48, of Westfield, was arrested at 4:01 a.m. on June 21, for an active warrant out of Scotch Plains. The Officer stopped Simpson for a motor vehicle violation on South Avenue and discovered the warrant. Simpson was arrested, processed, posted bail and released. Geoffrey Pridgeon, 53, of South Plainfield, was arrested at 8:54 a.m. on June 22, for an active warrant out of South Plainfield, Piscataway and Plainfield. The Officer stopped Pridgeon for a motor vehicle violation at East 7th Street and Terrill Road and discovered the warrant. Pridgeon was arrested, processed and turned over to Middlesex County Sheriff's Office. Jovan Jordan, 25, of Plainfield was arrested at 11:57 a.m. on June 23, for an active warrant out …

Firefighters responded to a working fire at 6 Short Hills Lane shortly after 7 p.m. this evening.
Nearly an hour and a half after the Scotch Plains Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 6 Short Hills Lane in Scotch Plains, fire fighters from Scotch Plains and neiboring communities are still working to battle the blaze. Scotch Plains Police Captain Brian Donnelly stated that no one was home when the blaze began and the fire department has yet to deterimine the cause of the two alarm fire. Donnelly also said that at this time, the fire department has no reason to believe that the cause is suspicious. A call for mutual aid was placed, but so far the fire department has been able to contain the fire, protecting neighboring houses from any damage. Indecent Exposure On June 12, a Swans Mill Lane resident reported that a motorist exposed himself to her while she was walking in Scotch Plains. The victim stated that a motorist stopped to ask her for directions and then he exposed himself to her. The suspect then immediately drove away. The driver is described as a black male between the ages of 18 and 20 driving a small black four-door vehicle. Disturbing the Peace On June 13, Scotch Plains Police responded to a disturbance at approximately 3 p.m. on Route 22. Upon arrival, the officers discovered two motorists arguing after one tried to pass the other on the highway. Police were able to calm the drivers down and advised them to leave the area. A statewide survey shows that most parents see their homes as access points.
About eight in 10 parents in New Jersey feel that kids get prescription and over-the-counter drugs out of medicine cabinets, either from their own homes (68%) or from a friend's house (11%), according to New Statewide Survey results released Wednesday by the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey. In addition, the Partnership's annual Tracking Study of Parent Attitude and Behavior in Alcohol and Drug Abuse found New Jersey parents estimate that approximately three in 10 middle school students are abusing prescription or over-the-counter drugs (26%). At the same time, the vast majority of New Jersey parents—82%—never permit their 12- to 15-year-old children to drink alcohol in their homes. But most parents believe kids are getting alcohol …
