The board unanimously voted to renew Everyday Math for grades K-6.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education unanimously approved renewing the Everyday Math curriculum at the Feb. 21 meeting. Prior to Thursday's meeting the board discussed renewing the program at previous meetings and also following a presentation by the Mathematics Supervisor at the Feb. 14 meeting. At the Feb. 14 meeting, Mathematics Supervisor John Veninger made a presentation on the successes of the Everyday Math program and encouraged the board to renew the program to the 2012 version. Many of the board members found Veninger’s presentation informative and helpful and they seemed to agree that renewing the program would be in the best interest of the children. The following information was provided by the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Newcomers' Club. Members of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Newcomers' Club joined together this past Saturday at the organization's annual Holiday Breakfast. As a community outreach for the aftermath of Sandy, we are working with local organizations and families to collect filled shoeboxes for those affected in New Jersey. The Little Shoebox Project provides needy children & adults with shoeboxes full of thoughtful gifts that they might not otherwise receive. This small box can make a world of difference to an individual going through an experience many of us struggle to imagine. We collected over 40 shoeboxes at this Holiday Breakfast. New and old members gathered for Coffee in the Park.
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Newcomers club hosted their first event of Fall on Sept. 20, Coffee in the Park at La Grande Park. Both old and new members gathered for the event. The next event is their Fall Meet and Greet coming up next week on Oct 11th at 8pm at Forest Road Park in Fanwood. The following information was provided by the Newcomer's Club. Residents voice concerns about petitions, representation in hearing.
Tension ran high in the second hearing of a potential consolidation study as Fanwood residents questioned the petition process and voiced concerns about the grassroots organization that submitted an application for consolidation between the borough and Scotch Plains. The hearing, which was held as per requirement of the application, ran more than two hours as more than 70 people filled a room at 200 Forest Road to discuss whether or not consolidation would help or hinder Fanwood. The hearing was mediated by Assistant Director of Local Government Services Christopher Vaz who attempted to organize a meeting filled with outbursts. Clark Clark Council passed a resolution on Tuesday night authorizing a letter to State Senators and Assemblymembers asking for their assistance in a massive lawsuit that Clark, Garwood and more than 80 other towns in New Jersey are facing. According to Township Attorney Joseph Triarsi, in 2005 the NJ Department of Environmental Protection filed a suit alleging that three companies involved inNewark’s Diamond Shamrock plant were responsible for polluting Newark Bay with cancer-causing dioxins and other chemicals.
