Hurricane Sandy

Sandy Cost Scotch Plains Roughly $1 Million

At the Feb. 19 council meeting township manager Henry Underhill and Mayor Kevin Glover said the township is probably looking at an excess of $1 million spent on Sandy.

During the Manager’s Report at the Feb. 19 Scotch Plains Council Meeting, the ongoing cleanup from Sandy was discussed by Township Manager Henry Underhill, who stated that originally the township borrowed $800,000 but that they probably tacked on another $200,000. According to Underhill, the township originally borrowed the $800,000 with money set aside for grinding, but are now probably near $1 million due to salaries from the police and fire department. Also, Underhill stated that he hasn’t seen the numbers from the police and fire departments as of yet, but he said he was sure the township was probably in another $200,000. “75 percent should be coming back to us,” Underhill stated. The township has been working on the report to submit…

FCC Approves AM Radio Station for Scotch Plains-Fanwod

Both mayors have been working to get an AM radio station up and running for mostly emergency related purposes.

The following information was provided by the Borough of Fanwood. The Federal Communications Commission has approved a license for a community access radio station to be used by Scotch Plains and Fanwood to broadcast emergency and other information. Both Scotch Plains Mayor Kevin Glover and Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr announced they had applied for the license at their respective inaugurations on January 1, 2013. I'm Holden MaGroin and this is for Tree#2. Now you have made my little saplings blush with your first sentence. But that's ok, I sometimes have to also say "do as I say, not as I do." Since you seem to be having such fear and frustration with your dealings with the people who work in town hall, and are of the belief that it's because the workers are posting on the Patch, I would guess that it's …   more ›

SPMC Plans to Prepare 2013 Budget Without SID Fee

The Scotch Plains Management Corporation met on Feb. 12 and planned to create a budget for 2013 that does not include the Special Improvement District fee.

The Scotch Plains Management Corporation decided at their Feb. 12 meeting to formulate and present to the town council a budget that would not include the Special Improvement District fees for 2013. The SPMC should have proposed a budget in December and failed to do so, according to Mayor Kevin Glover who sits on the board. Moving forward, Chairman Dominick Verdic and Treasurer Tom Russo stated they would work on a budget to discuss with the board and then present it to the council. During the Feb. 12 SPMC meeting the discussion was heavily focused on whether or not the fee should be suspended and what changes the SID can make with the money they currently have to improve downtown Scotch Plains. This would be the fifth year the SPMC …

Scotch Plains After Storm Report: Area Received Nearly 12 Inches of Snow

Mayor Kevin Glover releases an after storm report. DPW continues to clear streets.

The following information was provided by the Township of Scotch Plains. Early reports appear to confirm that we "weathered" the snowstorm well. Approximately 12 inches of snow fell within our community yesterday evening and over night; presently we have no reports of power outages or downed trees. Most streets are passable and our DPW will be continuing their efforts to plow and salt our streets, they expect all roads to be cleared by noon.  I want to thank you all for heeding our advice to stay of the roads which clearly helped facilitate the clean up by our DPW. I also want to acknowledge our entire DPW department for their outstanding work to keep our Municipal roads open and safe, and commend our Police Department, members of our …
