The following information was provided by the Scotch Plains Recreation Department. The Scotch Plains Recreation Commission is proud to announce the next Senior Yoga session will begin registering on Tuesday, March 5th. Senior Yoga will run on Mondays and Wed. beginning March 11th to April 17th for 12 sessions from Noon to 1:00pm. The class will feature yoga that can be done either traditionally or in a chair. The class will also use bands to help with stretching and toning the body. Registration can be done in person at the Recreation Office, beginning at 8:30am on March 5th or completed online at www.scotchplainsnj.com and clicking on the “Community Pass” link and selecting the “2013 Winter Brochure” season. Senior Zumba will run on Tuesday and Thursdays beginning February 26th for 12 sessions from 10:15am to 11:15am at the Towne House in Green Forest Park. The class will feature cardio, Zumba and some weight training. The Scotch Plains Recreation Commission is proud to announce their Senior Exercise programs will begin registration on Friday, January 4th. The Department will offer 3 programs for Seniors, offering them the opportunity to stay active during the week. Senior Zumba will run on Tuesday and Thursdays beginning January 8th for 12 sessions from 10:30am to 11:30am. The class will feature cardio, Zumba and some weight training. Senior Line Dancing will take place on Mondays beginning January 7th with popular instructors Sandy and Lou that will keep the participants in rhythm and moving. Union Catholic High School is proud to announce that Seniors Andres Aguaiza of Roselle Park and Kiana Hawkins of Irvington have been selected as recipients of the 2012 New Jersey Rising Scholars Student Recognition Award. The New Jersey Rising Scholars Student Recognition Program was established by the NJ Department of Education, in collaboration with the NJ Amistad Commission and the Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities committee, to honor the academic achievement of high school seniors from diverse backgrounds who are interested in attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). New Providence native Linda Lebiedz wins three gold, moves onto National Senior Games
One of Scotch Plains' own, Linda Liebiedz, participated in last weekends New Jersey Senior Olympics, where she took home three gold medals and one bronze. This was Liebiedz's third time competing in the Senior Olympics, in the past she has won nine medals, not including this years. Liebiedz, originally from New Providence, got involved in the events through a few friends from college. When she was in High School there were no team sports, but she was very involved in intramural sports and played college softball for Montclair State. Liebiedz won gold in horseshoes, mixed double pickleball, and foul shooting basketball. She received her bronze medal in basketball accuracy shooting. The 2012 Senior Class will perform a variety of pieces in a final recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14.
Over the past four years, you have heard their beautiful voices, watched them master their instrumental craft, and perform in memorable musicals. Now, all are invited to say goodbye to the SPFHS Senior class with a special showcase, in celebration of their musical achievements as high school students. The recital will be held in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14. The 29 seniors participating in the showcase will perform a large variety of musical tunes including those performed by Carrie Underwood, musical theater giant Idina Menzel, Mozart, and Jethro Tull. On May 18th, 2012, A water fight was organized outside of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School by the 2012 senior class. It was the last day of school for seniors leaving on Senior Project, and followed two other acts of organized Mayhem: A massive pillow fight and a sitting demonstration in a central hallway. This video, which features music by the popular alternative rock band, MGMT, has received warm reception from students and parents alike and has been featured on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Facebook Page.
