Shop and Dine Event in Scotch Plains and Fanwood to Help Local Businesses

From Nov. 24 to Dec. 8, the Scotch Plains and Fanwood Business and Professional Associations are sponsoring a "Shop & Dine" event to help local businesses recover from their losses during Hurricane Sandy.

As many Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents took to social media throughout Sandy, one resident realized the usefulness of Facebook and Twitter to and help local businesses who had to shut their doors during the power outages. Starting Saturday, Nov. 24 to Dec. 8, SPF businesses will run various promotions and events as they participate in the "Shop & Dine" event. Amy Boroff came up with the idea to bring local businesses some business following Sandy and the Fanwood and Scotch Plains Business and Professional Associations immediately jumped on the idea and got things moving. Boroff commented on a Facebook page created by a local Scotch Plains James Hannon, titled "Scotch Plains - Fanwood Shop & Dine," about the idea after seeing how much…

Shop Local on Small Business Saturday

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in your town?

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over your town and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third …

Flannery's in Fanwood Becomes Oh Brian's Pourhouse

Oh Brian's Pourhouse will have an updated menu, additional taps, new uniforms and an eventual expansion.

The popular Fanwood pub Flannery's on South Avenue is undergoing changes by the end of this year, starting with a name change to Oh Brian's Pourhouse. Part-Owner and head chef Brian Walter, said the change is "not the end of Flannery's, but the beginning of Oh Brian's Pourhouse." The new pourhouse is receiving 15 new taps, an updated menu and new uniforms for the staff. The outdoors of Oh Brian's is also getting a facelift, it was painted a bright red and is awaiting a new sign featuring the new name. Part-Owner Brian Costello said the two are looking to re-invent what they already are, which Walter likes to say is a hyperlocal pub.  "Our food is something we are very proud of," Costello said. He added that the new menu is something they …

Letter to the Editor: Resident Thanks Mountain Deli for Their Generosity After Sandy

Resident Patty Pasko takes the time to thank Sal and Jacquie Merlo for their dedication to their customers during the power outages following Hurricane Sandy.

Thank You Mountain Deli   Sal and Jacquie Merlo, owners of Mountain Deli on Mountain Avenue in Scotch Plains were concerned about their customers. With no power they used a generator at their deli to open for business each day from 6am until about 2pm serving hot beverages and sandwiches to area residents. Every day Sal would make trips to Pennsylvania for gas to run the generator, Carlstadt to get food , and then back to the deli to prepare for the next day. He did this so his customers would be able to have hot coffee and some hot food making little or no profit.   Unfortunately because of the loyality to their customers, since they opened for business they are not eligible to collect for any food loss from FEMA. So... all the area …
